Thrilled for Brown since she was definitely snubbed last year. But not sad about Casey and The Prom. If I never have to see him choreograph for supposedly contemporary high schoolers where they actually look like they're straight from an episode of Saved By The Bell, well, it'll be too soon.
I saw BEETLEJUICE for the first time last week. I went in with low expectations because of the opinions of people on this board. I ended up LOVING it. So I'm thrilled that it received as many nominations as it did, including Best Musical.
I was most surprised by the lack of love for BE MORE CHILL. Goldderby's odds had it in the 4th slot.
I'm thrilled for HADESTOWN and its 14 nominations! I wonder if it hurts DeShields' chances for a win given that he and Patrick Page could split the Hadestown vote?

They really dropped the ball with that one.

I'm clueless regarding your meaning/use of "dogma", but enchanted by the back-handed dichotomy of disappointment and pleasure in your statement above.
Just curious to anyone who might know. I haven’t seen TKAM and it’s nominated for Best Score. Do they use the theme from the movie (as they do in the tv ads) as part of the score or is it completely original? Thanks in advance.
I like both of these actors. but I'm very happy Reeve Carney was snubbed. like Glenn Close at the Oscars, you do not get something that you do not deserve.

I’m surprised BMC didn’t get a Best Orchestrations nod - I thought some of the technologically-inspired sounds, like the theremin, were really innovative ideas. I could still see them paying some money to get a performing slot on the show, and given its popularity among teenagers, CBS would probably love for them to perform and bring in another demographic.

I always enjoy your posts."

That gif makes me smile (especially, the wide-eyed, cigar chomp at the end) - and so does After Eight.
In a cyberspace environment for those whose passion is Theatre Arts, and where the reality of who the posters are can be hidden, I enjoy being open to the possibility that After Eight might be an actor.
I don't want to know the truth re: that possibility, unless After Eight wants to set me straight.
Either way, he's truly a character (like the gif), and as I've said before, I have an appreciation for how he expresses himself, and where he draws the line on limiting personal attacks.
So After Eight asserts there is a liberal elite agenda and then completely disproves his claim by having to admit the play he has targeted did not actually receive a nomination.
- I'm shocked, surprised, stunned, and happy for all the Beetlejuice nominations.
- I wasn't a big fan of The Prom, but i'm happy for all the nominations it got. Hopefully that'll help it stay open for awhile because I do love having Broadway be diverse story-wise.
- I'm personally shocked the Prom and Cher didn't get choreography nominations
- BMC got no love and that's kinda disheartening. I thought at least George would get featured.
I'm kind of surprised that Lifespan of a Fact disappeared without a trace. It wasn't much of a play, but I thought Cherry Jones, Daniel Radcliffe and especially Bobby Cannavale were excellent in it.
I was hoping for a Bonnie Milligan nomination as well. Also Head Over Heels choreography deserved to be recognized. It was the best most excited of the season and on top of that actually fueled the storytelling of the piece. Ah well the memories live on.
Pope is the sixth overall to receive two noms at the same year, he's also the second man after Rylance in 2014 and the first man with both play and musical noms. Dana Ivey in 1984 was nominated as Best Featured Actress in a Play for Heartbreak House and Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Sunday in the Park with George.
- This is the bitter old timer in me, pardon me for a moment.... but I am drinking the delicious tears of the BMC Stans in my cereal this morning as it got pretty much exactly what I figured it was gonna and it's really lucky to have gotten Score considering that their were other strong play scores waiting in the wings to take it's spot. That was a "welcome to Broadway at last Joe" nomination. Fans that don't recognize that while they might love songthing they should also open their minds to other things as well get no pity from me this day as I stand atop Tony nomination mountain with my bro Hadestown."
So....you're going to actively enjoy the suffering of those who have different tastes than you, while chastising those who don't have "open minds?" If only there were nominations this morning for silliest statements on an online message board.
(And before I'm accused of being any sort of BMC shill: I felt it was the 4th best of the 4 eligible musicals I've seen. But I got a kick out of it, I think it's actually very important for Broadway to actually bring in the dreaded "stans" from time to time, and would've liked to see it nominated for Best Musical. However, I did NOT see Beetlejuice and therefore can't say definitively that it's been snubbed unfairly).

I get that these are awards for professionals (regional, or Broadway) but the work they did ontheir production ofAlienwas inspirational. Recognition (in some way) would be equally inspirational."
I don't think the Tony Committee wants to reward someone for appropriating another's intellectual property without permission or license. (Even if the owners of Alien intellectual property haven't openly objected)

All three of them were flawless - some of the most perfect casting I can remember. Agree that it's a shame it disappeared without a trace, though I can't say I'm surprised in such a crowded season.

I find vindication in this as I have been saying from day ONE that Be More Chill was likely only going to be getting a Score nominations (and honestly should have gotten featured actor, not thrilled with the featured actor category all around here but I digress). But I feel pretty good that I was right from the start. It's a decent show (also why didn't it get a orchestrations nomination, that's the real snub) but I get a bad impression of some shows personally that are okay, good, or even decent, that have toxic fanbases that get up in my face on social media over how perfect, wonderful, and untouchable that show is. Not against the SHOW itself but against that TOXIC part of the fanbase. That chunk that is currently raging on twitter and tumblr over this being and talking about how everything else is some kind of lesser work of theatre because it was all nominated over BMC............. though honestly it should be up there over Beetlejuice BUT can't go back now. All because they are not open minded enough to look passed ONE show out of almost a dozen others this season and to look at the rest of a pretty good season. The toxic ones that were only here because of one show and didn't care to look at others or consider others and to see that the show got pretty much what it deserved... minus the above mentioned Featured Actor and Orchestrations which I feel were snubs. Especially Orchestrations. I almost feel like Orchestrations was a snub due to that little mini controversy over the ochestrator playing in the pit and that is bull if they snubbed it over that. Nothing else sounds like Be More Chill does this season with the digital sound and that should have been recognized.
Did I misread, or was Nathan Lane snubbed? Seems odd as they loved the other 2, but maybe just a tight category.
Also, I didn’t think Caitlyn deserved a nom. It’s an incredibly boring character played in the most basic, boring ways. She starts the show as an awkward teenager and evolves into... an awkward shy teenager. And her vocals weren’t impressive the way Sophie Ann’s were.
Sad Kritzer got shut-our as she was the stand-out for me. And Brightman was one of the most grating performances.
Surprised to see Miller left off Best Actor as he seems to be the performance everyone was raving about?

I agree I was hoping for Sophia to get a nomination too as her vocals were amazing when I saw Beetlejuice.
