I assume Lambert has a dedicated fan base that will turn out but I’m not sure aboutCravalho being a big draw- people certainly know Moana but they may not know her, specifically. Regardless, I think it’s telling they went with 2 sort of B-list names rather than one A-lister in one of the roles."
In what universe is Adam Lambert considered a "B Lister"? He's certainly as big (if not bigger) than Nick Jonas.
Adam Lambert has 1.9m followers vs 35.3m Nick Jonas on instagram. I do wonder if Adam Lambert might have older fans with more money to spend though. I personally think it’s a major artistic and commercial achievement to get him in the role for a revival with mediocre reviews as a replacement though. Very curious to see how this translates to box office.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)

It's not a knock on him or his talent, and I certainly don't particularly care about Nick Jonas either way, but Jonas is undeniably a different level of celebrity than Lambert.

Lambert does have a fanbase, I just don't know how big it is. It's also a fairly different fanbase than the Redmayne fans.
Credit where it's due: Redmayne has sold a lot better than I expected he would, though the sky-high numbers have softened from where they were at the start (a weekly gross drop of 400-500 and an average ticket drop of about $40).
Given the production value + the title + the sales up to this point, it might be enough to have someone who audiences go "oh, I know who that is, I'll buy a ticket." They should be fine through New Years. The January-March slump is the big unknown. They can afford to only (lol) gross 1 to 1.1 mil a week and remain solvent, they just won't be making a profit.

He performs seven shows a week instead of the 8 from earlier. I don't think the title and the show sells on its own in the way it does on the West End.You certainly couldn't have had the kindof follow-up casting that London had. You only need to compare the difference between how much the Monday show sells in advance and the Tuesday one in NY

HARD Disagree. I saw Mason Alexander Park last year and Layton Williams just a few nights ago and, while there is a bit of a character voice, neither went anywhere NEAR the Muppet voice of Eddie Redmayne at all. Layton even added quite a few opt-ups in some of the songs (particularly Wilkommen and Money).
While, yes, we won’t likely get Adam in his fullest range, I have no doubt that he will still manage to find his theatre footing again and knock this out of the park. To me, this seems like it would’ve been inspired casting had they opened with this. (Remember when most of us were like…Gayle Rankin who?)

I genuinely think Adam Lambert could perform perhaps the most haunting "I Don't Care Much" we've ever heard.

Forgot that he's only doing 7 a week.
The reality is MOST revival titles don't mean a ton on Broadway, and I'm sure it's a conscious effort not to settle for the types of people with less name value who replaced in London.
This really seems like rather luxury casting for both roles. I think Redmayne’s name is doing the lion’s share of marquee value. Here, you have two people who are relatively well known for different areas.
The Gen Z crowd will go nuts for Auli’i as she was not only Moana, but was recently Janis in the MEAN GIRLS movie.
Honestly, if he could sing, Cole Escola would be a GREAT emcee down the road.
I just hope they replace Ato Blankson-Wood while they’re at it. I’ve seen better character development on old episodes of “Hollywood Squares”

I might be repeating myself with this question but has anyone seen both Ato Blankson-Wood and Omari Douglas in the role? The reason I ask is because I swear the way people describe Ato it's also how I felt about Omari - so I'm wondering if the common link is actually the direction of the character and not the actor.

I did. I felt Omari at least came alive in his scenes with Buckley, and Ato reminded me that Cliff is a real drip.

I know many are just now familiar with Cole Escola but he’s been a known NYC artist for over a decade and has been on several now gone TV shows like AT HOME WITH AMY SEDARIS and Hulu’s DIFFICULT PEOPLE. Yes, he can sing, too.
No one remembers the Mean Girls movie for good reason.
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist.
Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino.
This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more.

Can't speak for Omari, but I did see Nathan Ives Moiba, and his Cliff was such an energy suck that I thought maybe this was his first time going on as an understudy or swing. Turns out he'd being doing the role for like 3 months at that point. I do think it is directorial. I did see the show last week with Ato and I thought he was fine? I feel like he's trying at least to get some actual personality into the role.

This production’s direction of Cliff is its weakest link. The actor I saw in London last year seemed lost at sea, and from what I’ve read this seems to be a shared experience across a lot of the Cliff’s Frecknall has directed.

It’s just because Adam Lambert to me is a rare male equivalent of a Broadway female diva with a unique and interesting vocal timbre, expression and power. I know this might sound overstated but I genuinely believe Adam Lambert’s voice is as special as Lady Gaga’s, Bernadette Peters or Patti LuPone’s. I’ve only seen him live once - in one of the queen concerts and it was more special than I could ever imagine or even hear on a recording. It’s like he has no limits - and he isn’t just a powerful blaster he can go right down to the very quiet intimate expression you would expect of someone who I would rave about like this.
He kind of reminds me a little bit of Nicole S - another person who has extreme top tier vocals I didn’t even realise until I saw Sunset that hasn’t seemed to quite have had the success they deserve. I must admit, when I was looking at the instagram followers to fact check the claim about his celebrity I didn’t realise his following was indeed so small.
I predict the show will suddenly have a new breath of fresh air into it after these replacements. It was exciting to see Eddie in London but I knew that his performance really was not very memorable next to Alan Cumming’s, so as soon as I saw Jonathan Groff in Merrily I knew the tony would be going elsewhere. I wonder if Adam Lambert’s could turn into the performance that just gives the production the little bit of excitement and edge it needs to succeed.
And obviously Adam Lambert in glitter and makeup feels a little bit more at home than Eddie Redmayne. I hope what we see is a transformation from a skilled actor who has carefully crafted the entire show from a drawing room (Redmayne) to someone who is more inhabiting the show with their own personality and charisma (Cumming/hopefully Lambert).

Even with your usual hyperbole, you did not just compare Lambert to Gaga. She has the kind of success because she is unique and has something to say with her work. There are plenty of extremely talented vocalists, but that doesn't matter if your personal output is a whole bunch of nothing, and most of Lambert's personal material is the kind of stuff that sounds like it was whipped up in an afternoon, or now, the kind of blah that AI could generate in seconds
I am careful with my words and was only comparing them vocally. Lady Gaga is Judy Garland of the 21st century, she is an expert vocalist, an expert song writer who is constantly reinventing herself and succeeding every time. She is a skilled actor. A comedian. And entertainer. She is a cultural phenomenon. An icon. I didn’t even think it needed to be said that of course there is no comparison to Adam Lambert. On this list Adam is only one or two of those things.
