Shes a simply phenomenal actress with an innate sense of humor and timing.
I have no idea if she will sell tickets (hard to imagine by this point people are still going to see Escola specifically), or even if shes right for this role, but seems like brilliant casting to me--heres hoping for a dip in ticket sales so I can cheaply revisit.
Not only is she a phenomenal, nuanced, deeply-felt and smart actor, she studied clowning extensively and seems like a true weirdo excited to make gonzo off-the-wall choices. It’s thrilling genius casting.
The idea that anyone is disappointed that a true talent gets a shot at a star turn is so weird to me. Especially with Oh Mary! and Cole’s breakout performance in it. How is a star born if star vehicles are only given to already bonafide stars?Being wary and unfamiliar? Sure. But being obstinate? Time for a nap grandmas, someone is getting grumpy!

I agree you don't have to be a bonafide star. Looking forward to seeing Betty Gilpin as Mary!
Also, hopefully the 2 understudies for Mary (Hannah Solow and Jackie Sanders) will have more chances to shine in the role. Yes I know Hannah already performed Mary twice back in November.
Is it terrible when seeing this news I wonder who they approached first?
I'm sure she's going to be hysterical - no question really. But for the desire for this to have a long run, I had hoped the first replacement for Cole would be a bigger star. I suppose there's an argument for making the play the star, though.
See, I didn’t even look at it like that. My reaction was “Damn, of the people they must have approached, Betty must have given ONE HELL of an audition or reading to be cast and I got even more excited”

What?? Both of Cole’s understudies are cisgender women. Just because Cole is playing Mary in drag doesn’t mean they always intended Mary to be played that way. Hell, most of the replacement suggestions thrown out on this thread are women.

The show will now have run an entire year and I'm sure each cast member will have upcoming vacations planned."
There’s already a second cover for Mary/Mary’s Chaperone, I believe. I can’t remember her name, but the show did post about her on one of their Instagram stories. Shemay have just been a vacation cover while Cole was out for a couple days and Hannah was Mary, as she’s not on the website or listed on IBDB, but I know I saw it."
