Glenn Closeis determined to get theSunset Boulevardremake made.
“It’s moving forward,” Close, 77, exclusively toldUs Weeklyof the film atVariety’s 2024 Power of Women luncheon in New York City on Thursday, May 2. “The movie is in the works and I’m not giving up on that one.”
The Oscar nominee added that she loves the character Norma Desmond, whom she previously played in two separate runs of theSunset BoulevardBroadwaymusical.
“It’s so beautiful to me that she’s always still so relevant. The time passes, but that character is always important,” she said. “We’re trying to find a director, we have a great script. … That character of Norma is so heartbreakingly beautiful and will never not have relevance, it’s been a great blessing to play her and I’m not willing to let her go yet without one more tribute.”

Not in my Broadway history. I might be in the minority but I didnt like her portrayal of Norma Desmond.
If we are just basing it on the Broadway production Betty Buckley was phenomenal.
I saw the revival and thought she was extraordinary. Her Norma will never be surpassed. Especially her cuckoo camp ending.
Has anyone ever asked themselves whatever became of Norma after the shooting? Now that is a sequel I'd like to see!

She was committed to an institution, where she insisted they were making a musical movie version of the story.

Norma Desmond is not an “old-age actress.” That is such a misunderstanding of the role. She is considered past her prime for her era and too old to play roles like Salome. Her fame is fading and she is cast aside. She is not “old age.”

How long has she been talking about this? It feels like at least a decade.
I think Glen would make a great Kimberly Levaco. She's just about the right age too!!! Sadly, I don't think anyone's in any rush to make a Kimberly Akimbo movie.

Exactly. Norma is written to be fifty years old, not 80 (which is what Glenn would be by the time this supposed film would probably be released).
Close is just jealous that Nicole Scherzinger is getting so much praise for “her” role. Let it go, girl. “Nothing’s wrong with being eighty - unless you’re acting fifty!”

Shh! You don’t yell at a sleepwalker or she could fall and break her neck.
Just let Olivia Coleman do the movie and have someone dub the singing.

It woud be eerily meta if Schirzinger were to replace Close in a film adaptation ... if one ever gets made. lol.

I'm curious if anyone would actually want to see Nicole in a film version....her performance feels very theatrical and meant to be seen/heard live than on film. The energy in the theatre kind of feels like you're watching Whitney Houston and I don't see how to recreate that on film. I actually would prefer to see Glenn in a film version.
As for whether this will ever happen, maybe it won't but I will say that sometimes these things DO happen. For example, for years and years Chita would tell us that "The Visit" was coming to Broadway and each year everyone would roll their eyes until it actually happened.

Cute how her updates are literally verbatim every few years. Bless her heart.
At this point, her epitaph is going to read, "We're still looking for a director."
The Glenn not see the irony of Norma Desmond desperately trying to make a picture based on a character at least half her age?

Yet the prom movie was made instantly and even risked covid because they had to make it before Meryl got any older

Well, there's a difference between a powerful producer like Ryan Murphy who had a built-in distribution deal in place grabbing a property while it still is hot and someone trying to get a project off the ground several decades after an adaptation had first been floated.
Nothing against Glenn Close, though - if she's able to make it happen, good for her.
I gave up on Glenn when she was so thirsty for that golden dildo, she started making conservative propaganda.
That's the same update that has been said for many, many years now. We are looking for a director, a good script, a studio to finance, etc.
A movie should be made, about the attempt to make SB into a movie.

Oh it's completely ridiculous.
Nobody with any financial sense would put up a dime for this. ESPECIALLY not now that the Scherzinger production exists and has reinvigorated a dusty show.
In the unlikely event that this ever got made, she'd be the laughing stock of Hollywood and it would be a CATS-level catastrophe.
Glenn also becomes less relevant by the year, and is hardly a prestige actor nowadays. Streisand in GYPSY feels more likely these days.
I wish ALW would rip off the bandaid and pull the show.

In some ways ALW kind of has. I remember in a recent interview he was asked about the Glenn Close Sunset movie and he was pretty hands off in his response - saying things like it's out of his hands, he didn't even know where it stood he didn't know or think it would ever be made.
And just watching that clip and seeing Glenn hanging on like she is just sad to me. I wonder if this is why she's not seen Nicole in London or NY - she doesn't want to imagine that this can be done without her
From the NYT:
This fall, she’ll travel to Berlin to shoot a “Hunger Games” prequel, “Sunrise on the Reaping,” playing the malevolent Drusilla Sickle, and then to London for “An Elderly Lady Is Up to No Good,” a limited series based on the Swedish author Helene Tursten’s stories about a woman who ends up killing those who annoy her. After that, she’ll return her attention, as ever, to “Sunset Boulevard.” The latest script, by Chris Terrio, who won the 2013 adapted screenplay Oscar for “Argo,” opens with a montage of Norma at the height of her fame. “You see what she was, and then you [meet] the woman,” Close says. Lloyd Webber, who also hopes it’ll get made, sounds more cautious. “What people have got to remember is that the rights to ‘Sunset Boulevard’ are very jealously guarded by Paramount because they regard the Billy Wilder movie as one of the jewels in their crown,” he says. “She’s tried, I’ve tried, everyone’s tried. Ultimately, it’s going to be their decision.” (A source at the studio, which has undergone multiple regime changes and a merger with Skydance Media since the film was in development, says there hasn’t been any recent movement on the project.)
Although she’s far from ready to admit defeat, Close knows that the odds are against her. “I’m now pretty sure that I won’t have enough time to do everything that I want,” she says soberly.”

For God's sake, give me the damn camera and I'll direct it myself.
