I didn't like Eva, but enjoyed the rest of the show, so I guess something about it was a success.

Who is going to play Evita? I still haven’t seen anyone do it better than Lupone and Loni Ackerman. If you can’t be better or match Lupone or Loni Ackerman then why even do the show? That show literally hinges on if the actress playing Eva can pull it off. If she can’t, you have no show. Doesn’t matter if the other performances and technical aspects are good.
Same with Funny Girl. That show only works if the actress playing Fanny is truly the greatest star. Doesn’t matter how hot your Nick is. The show will tank.
I can only think of a very select few actresses (literally 4 women ) in the world who MIGHT be able to pull off Evita 6-8 times a week.

Curious as to who these might be for you
Tina Arena ( aged out of the roll ) was spectacular in the Australian production ( Hal Prince original ) back in 2018/19. It certainly was a thrilling night of theatre, sung beautifully well.
Wonderful. We enjoyed this at Regents Park
Rachel Z would be great as Evita. (Ducks down in shame)

If Ariana Grande became available and willing to do the role... I certainly would toss aside any actress I would've considered if I was Lloyd. Maybe that's what happened with Debose? With Ariana Grande wanting to come back to the theater, and it needing to be a real meaty role, I'd think this would be the opportunity she'd be looking for.

I saw her do it ten years ago. She seemed to have no difficulty with the score.

I saw her in the tour back in 2013! She was great. I also saw her in the Frozen tour and when went on for Nicole in Sunset a few weeks ago. She always delivers!

That was fast. And given her previous interviews on the subject, she was definitely interested. Wouldn't be surprised if the word on the street actually hurt the bottom line of her negotiations...."
This is precisely what I think happened. People didn’t respond well to the prospect and that affected their decision. She hasn’t had a single success (even WSS bombed in theaters), so she’s not a draw."
Alright naysayers. Debose is filming a series with Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis (two of the most famous actresses in the world),playing Cordelia in Lear Rex with Al Pacino as Lear and Jessica Chastain as Goneril, and she has many other projects scheduled. If you want to hate on her for whatever reason, that’s fine. But she’s clearly a success, and she’s clearly a draw. You can have your opinion, but don’t be making up BS to support it."
Of the movies DeBose has done since West Side Story...
Wish (lead role) - 48% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes; box office flop.
I.S.S. (lead role) - 61% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes; box office flop.
Argylle (supporting role) - 33% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes; box office flop.
House of Spoils (lead role) - 48% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Kraven the Hunter (supporting role) - 17% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes; box office flop."
New to the list...
Love Hurts (co-lead role) - 18% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes; currently flopping at the box office.
During Next Best Picture's recent podcast review of that movie, everyone on the panel mentioned that they all have no idea what the hell is going on with her career trajectory. They all felt she mainly lucked out with West Side Story because she was under the guidance of Steven Spielberg. Yet since then, Hollywood hasn't quite figured out what to do with her. Matt Neglia mentioned that she needs to have a serious sit down with her managers.
Come on people, we all know she's just not right for Eva, period.

Ariana's movie career is a reflection of her acting abilities that are mediocre, imo. She has a wonderful voice, but there are not enough movie musicals for everyone who just sings and dances well.

I don't even think Ariana Debose has a wonderful voice. She's a phenomenal dancer, a passable actor, and a decent singer. I think WSS was a lucky break for her (I was not enamored with her performance, for my money she was about the 5th best supporting performance in it) and everything since has been proof that she's not the star people thought she was.

Woof. I hate that this thread has become the Ariana Debose hate train. lol.
Let's not pretend this woman isn't superbly talented. I think she is just a tad overexposed.
The cherry on top being none of the projects lending to the over exposure have been to her benefit.

Agreed! I myself mean no disrespect to her at all. She's from my area of residence. I even got to speak with her for BroadwayWorld once, she was great to talk to.

From an interview with Frank Dilella:
JL: We’re casting Evita now. It’s a production that’s loosely based on the production I did at Regent’s Park. It will feel like an evolution of that production. There will be some big changes to that production. And working on Andrew’s new show is a huge honor. There’s no timeline for The Illusionist at the moment. It’s shaping up very well. And when it’s ready, we can’t wait to share it with audiences.

Obviously the show would be different in an indoor stage, but I'm curious to what the "big changes" are

More stripping.
The big change is Sets.

The last rumor I read on social media was that this will go in the Kerr w/ Zegler with the Balcony scene played in the actual balcony of the Kerr. Is that even doable? Will everyone have to turn around during Don't Cry....or would the orchestra be reconfigured somehow like Cabaret?

I was hearing the fire escape, another outdoor gimmick a la SUNSET BOULEVARD. No seat reconfiguration necessary, just live video.
Apparently they also sacked Banderas once Zegler was cast, so Peron will also read younger.
