That was fast. And given her previous interviews on the subject, she was definitely interested. Wouldn't be surprised if the word on the street actually hurt the bottom line of her negotiations....

Can she actually sing? Now, I haven't seen Emilia Pérez, but from what ive seen nobody actually has to sing. Just talk rhythmically...

Way too old and needs pipes of steel for this.

She's definitely singing.
But I don't necessarily think she's Eva Paron material.

They say that it actually is sometimes better not to win. Which may especially be true for those early in their careers. There have been artists who won Oscars early on, but their careers went downhill shortly thereafter. It's probably one of the reasons why Austin Butler lost for Elvis two years as well as why Mikey Madison might not win for Anora this year. Academy members by and large may prefer to give these young actors time to pay their dues.

This is precisely what I think happened. People didn’t respond well to the prospect and that affected their decision. She hasn’t had a single success (even WSS bombed in theaters), so she’s not a draw.
Folks here are desperate to take every opportunity to trash her.
Negotiations fall apart all the time. If anything, it's only unusual she said something in advance of them closing. Can't imagine talks were enough to discuss but they weren't actually interested and didn't "respond well to the prospect."
Vocally she didn’t seem right for the part so I view it as a win for the production.
IF Banderas is actually attached as Peron, per rumors here, they don’t need a name as Eva.

Alright naysayers. Debose is filming a series with Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis (two of the most famous actresses in the world), playing Cordelia in Lear Rex with Al Pacino as Lear and Jessica Chastain as Goneril, and she has many other projects scheduled. If you want to hate on her for whatever reason, that’s fine. But she’s clearly a success, and she’s clearly a draw. You can have your opinion, but don’t be making up BS to support it.
I always come back to this when I think of the great performances Sara Ramirez would have given had she not gone the TV route. I don’t blame her, she certainly made a lot more than had she limited herself to a Broadway career, but damn, her Lady of the Lake is one of my favorite performances of all time.

I’m not sure what BS has been made up. She literally hasn’t had a success other than Hamilton, which she wasn’t a lead on. Perhaps what you listed will change things, but she’s definitely not a draw at the moment.
She's a good dancer but not a great singer. It's best she won't be in Evita trying to handle those vocals.

Being a success and being a draw are two very different things. I don’t think anyone’s arguing that she’s not a success. She has an Oscar. She’s clearly talented and successful.
She is not, however, a box office draw. The numbers don’t lie.

Of the movies DeBose has done since West Side Story...
Wish (lead role) - 48% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes; box office flop.
I.S.S. (lead role) - 61% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes; box office flop.
Argylle (supporting role) - 33% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes; box office flop.
House of Spoils (lead role) - 48% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Kraven the Hunter (supporting role) - 17% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes; box office flop.
None of those films failed because of her, though. If anything, she was the only thing that worked for most of them.

Have you seen Kraven, her acting was wooden, deer in the headlights awful. So brought all her scenes down in a movie that couldn’t raise above crap. That’s how bad she was.

I do wonder if they cast a “Name” Che instead of it could still have the success ala Ricky Martin revival. If they were to have say an Enrique Iglesias type to lead.

Nobody has said they failed because of her, rather her name being attached did not lift any of them up into a success.

Emma Kingston isn't a household name yet, but she's the next Elphaba in London and is the ideal Evita (she's even played her already)

If they are not intending to cast a 'box office draw' I could see them offering it to Samantha Pauly who played the role in Jamie Lloyd's EVITA at Regents Park.
I thought she was terrific.

Sam Pauly Don’t Cry for Me Argentina
She sounds fabulous.

I think they were specifically seeking a black actress, or at least an afro-latina, for Eva.
