Tim Rice to ALW when writing the Evita score: "I know she's a bitch, but please make her beautiful."
Lloyd Webber also said: "I cannot imagine any intelligent person going to Evita and coming away with anything but the idea that she was a fairly grisly piece of work."
The show casts Eva Peron as a manipulative, selfish person. How on earth would it be inappropriate for the star to echo the show's obvious point of view? I have no idea what you're talking about here; I'm not sure anyone does, including you.
(My source for the first quotation is the Michael Walsh biography of ALW, which I haven't read in decades, so I might have a word or two wrong, but not the important ones.)
Zegler seems like a good fit for this role - her narcissism and faux "I speak for the people, I am one of you - just prettier and more talented" persona is kind of an ideal match.
Love this casting, she will be incredible.
Now announce her Che and Peron, and let’s get this journey to the Walter Kerr started!
If the production is to go to the Walter Kerry it likely means it has a smaller cast and orchestra size than a production of EVITA properly should have. Boo to that idea.
Beyond excited for this. I’m one of those rare people that LOVES revisionings of classic work so bring it on Jamie Lloyd.
Yes, the original classic interpretations will always hold their place but experiencing a whole new concept is not only refreshing but exciting as well. Knowing Bob Fosse’s original Broadway production of SWEET CHARITY inside-n-out, I LOVED the 2005 Broadway revival and the 2016 Off-Broadway production. It was such a treat watching non-Bob Fosse choreography though of course, each one did pepper in some flourishes but they still made it their own.
I saw the original 1979 Broadway production of EVITA several times (yes, many 2nd Act sneak ins) plus the 2012 Broadway revival and loved them both. Now time to see something completely new.
Side Note: I’m from Argentinean heritage and totally embrace Eva’s calculated manipulative interpretation in EVITA. Both my parents were kids during her reign in Argentina (late 40s/early 50s) and they each have their own views of Eva during that time (as children, of course). One positive and one not so much.

This is not about cute similarities.
It's all fun until she completely trashes Andrew Lloyd Webber, calls Eva Peron a weird b*tch and says the most terrible things about her co-stars in the production.
This is about her attitude, character, disrespect and complete lack of self-control in the media.

Let's just cut to the chase: you are a right winger and Zegler is the focus of an online hate campaign from the Right because she's playing a White character despite having Colombian roots. I think it was dopey of Zegler to say anything negative about the Snow White project, but she hasn't called anyone a b*tch. You are overreacting about a lovely, talented woman who at the very least will sing this better than the last revival's star."
The Snow White hate campaign is a good example of how bored people seething at other people's success will manipulate public opinion to suit their own agenda. Disney encouraged what she said although they love to throw their own people under the bus when it backfires. Zegler will sing the hell out of this role. I wish her the best.

Rachel Zegler is a brat who has likely ruined her career in Hollywood now that not one, but two studios have essentially fired her. That said, I saw a video of her singing Don't Cry for Me, Argentina on YouTube and she was brilliant. Her interpretation of the song and the character were spot on...seductive, charming and deadly. If she brings what I saw in the video to the show, it will be a winner. Now, she just has to learn how to give an interview.

Because she talked some **** about the original Snow White? Like... get a grip, Diva. This idea that people should be perfect little angels and never show personality in interviews and speak their minds (completely inoffensively mind you) is insane. You speak as if she's hurling racist slurs and fighting people in the street.

Yes. Because of her speaking her mind in a way that didn't help the film, the film was put on hold for a year, was re-worked (badly) and will now lose money. Some people did find her comments offensive, otherwise there wouldn't have been a re-do. I would also add David Dinkens to that since he cost 7 small people roles in a film that could have been a box office hit. She also lost any opportunity to work for Disney again...not a great career move. She also lost her contract for the stalker flicks. Like I said, she's a brat and will likely not work in Hollywood for a while. She was meh in Romeo and Juliet on Broadway...right now her voice is carrying her. I do think she will be good, if not great as Evita if she can grow up.
Anyone know if they will be using an alternate like Evita typically does? Would like to get tickets but want to make sure it’s for a Rachel performance.

If all if took were two people speaking a total of about 7 truthful sentences about Snow White then it sounds like this movie f*cked from the foundation and they had nothing to do with it. Maybe we should be placing the blame on a feckless studio who is greenlighting movies like a zombie instead of making anything anybody wants to see. Maybe we blame the studio for being so bankrupt of ideas that they have to keep going down this well and regurgitating their laurels to lesser and lesser box office returns? Snow White was the first animated feature EVER and they cashed that in for just another ugly live action movie desperately chasing a dollar they woefully feel like anybody in this generation of movie goers gives a **** about.
But no... you're right. Let's place the blame at the feet of Rachel Zegler and Peter Dinklage (No, not former New York Mayor David Dinkins as you referred to him before) for a couple sentences spoken almost 2 years ago that most people are not even aware of. Most people are not chronically online to parse comments of calling Snow White an old ass out of date movie.

I haven't booked tickets myself, but I saw on another board that people who did found that if there were performances that Rachel is scheduled to be off, there was a notification on the screen before they purchased tickets.

Also, like, is anyone really gonna argue that Snow White isn't at least a little bit dated?
Zegler has definitely not killed her career in Hollywood, as much as I dislike her performances. I actually have a lot of hope she'll be wonderful in Evita.

Correction noted about Dinklage. Not good with names. I agree Disney screwed up from the get go, but people did see her interview and were turned off by it. That's why Disney tried the redo. Then she acted out against Gadot so the premiere was cancelled. The girl needs some training in PR and, while you seem infatuated, not everyone is. That said, I also said I thought she would be great in Evita...this based on a video I saw of her on YouTube singing DCFMA. I even said so in the comments and she thanked me. I still think so. She needs to rebuild her creds...going to England and doing stage is a great start.
Zegler is a fantastic choice to play Eva Peron. Unfortunately Lloyd will probably have her perform Don’t Cry For Me Argentina while cutting onions, wearing a nude body suit, and standing on a loaf of bread shaped like Argentina
