The movie will have its world premiere at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

Official wording from the Sundance site:
"Valentín, a political prisoner, shares a cell with Molina, a window dresser convicted of public indecency. The two form an unlikely bond as Molina recounts the plot of a Hollywood musical starring his favorite silver screen diva, Ingrid Luna.
No stranger to the Festival (Gods and Monsters, 1998 Sundance Film Festival) or the megaplex (Dreamgirls, The Twilight Saga, Beauty and the Beast), director Bill Condon returns with a stellar, reimagined interpretation of Kiss of the Spider Woman (previously a 1985 film and 1993 Chita Rivera–helmed, Tony-sweeping musical). Set amid Argentina’s Dirty War of the 1980s, Condon marries a textually rich historical and political drama with the flashy technicolor extravagance of an old Hollywood musical.
Jennifer Lopez is an astonishing scene-stealer in a career-highlight performance as Luna/Aurora, with showstopping musical numbers that underscore the exuberant prowess of her dancing and voice. Diego Luna delivers unrelenting revolutionary conviction as Valentín, and Tonatiuh gives his Molina a tenderhearted power and theatrical flair.
Kiss of the Spider Woman is a grounded yet sumptuous spectacle, a masterfully vivacious cinematic experience for our modern times.—Cameron Asharian"
Has Jennifer read the full script not just her parts? Why is she calling this a beautiful love story? Molina is pining after a love that is impossible and Valentin manipulates those feelings to coerce and it all ends in massive tragedy. This isn’t Romeo & Juliet. Seems like a strange overall comment on the story.
Saw the test screening in LA. Very much looking forward to the festival debut so I can post thoughts.

Having seen the movie... that's very much not the story of this version. Still a tragedy of course.
I know that this is screening at Sundance soon, and IMDB states the release date is January 26th. Shouldn't we have a trailer (or at least a teaser) by now? Does anyone know when a trailer will be released?
That January release date seems wrong since that’s in the middle of the Sundance festival.

Yeah, that's when it first screens at Sundance. As far as I know there is no wide release date yet.
There wouldn’t be a trailer for a Sundance premiere. The goal of Sundance is to get distribution.
No sh&t it's more indie. It was financed as such.
Hopefully will be a good deal better than Wicked.
Curious to see how it's received, as that will dictate the type of bids it will get from distributors. JLO has a relationship with Amazon and Netflix (among other distributors) and they may see this as having a better chance of success than something like Emilia Perez.

Yeah, that "article" is just kinda ridiculous, although I suppose some people could hear there's a JLo musical and think it might be something more like, I dunno, Burlesque, or that bizarre paean to her one true love she did last year. But I do think there's a strong chance it will end up on a streaming service (with maybe some sort of limited theatrical release before hand.)
Wicked made a ton oif money so she is trying to justify why her movie wont. Of course there is the FACT that Jennifer Lopez can't act.

Her entire role in this movie is just to deliver high camp and she does that fine...
And you don't need to justify why a movie doesn't make $700M as if that's a negative against the movie, because most of them don't. She's describing the movie, it's much smaller and has much less mass market appeal.
I hope it manages to land in theatres and not just streaming.
Exactly. Isn't the reported budget (OK, I can't find it right now...) like a tiny fraction of Wicked's?
There’s a certain demographic here that will forgive Madonna for her faults at film but will crap on JLo. Not sure why. Both are great at what they do and do it damn well. Didn’t realize turning a certain age meant you have to criticize pop stars and actresses without any sort of context besides “I sing showtunes”.

The role of Aurora is a presentational role, not an acting role. Anyone familiar with the musical can easily tell you this. Jennifer Lopez was perfectly cast as that’s her strength.

I won’t forgive Madonna for her film work. She’s dreadful.
And what a shock to learn that Aurora isn’t an acting role. You learn something new every day!

Since we're weeks from the premiere, ill just say it.
--Possible Contextual Spoilers--
They present all of the "Movie within a Movie" scenes as high camp 1950-1960s melodrama. Jlo doesn't need to deliver pathos here.

Here’s hoping they showcase her dancing as well! She might lack in vocals, but Jennifer is an incredible dancer and I think people on this board are also forgetting that.
Eric, my understanding is that the total budget for the movie was in the vicinity of $20M, which certainly qualifies for indie status in this day and age. They made this crazy budget work by shooting stage work in New Jersey and extensive location work in Montevideo, Uruguay.
I'm so rooting for this show to be great so that more mid-size musical films can be green-lit in my lifetime.
HOW MUCH LONGER BEFORE I CAN TALK ABOUT THIS????????
