The thing about respect is you have to earn it rather than demand it.

Same goes with disrespect- if you earn it, don't be surprised if it's what you get.

If the cast had said nothing, there would be people using that to claim they supported this man and what he represents.  He is not just any audience member: I've never had secret service personnel clearing an auditorium before I visited.

He has to understand the consequences of saying and doing what he has done.  Not that he'll care, judging from his previous behaviour.

Pence deserves any peaceful outrage he receives.  Some seem to think that peaceful outrage should stop at the house or stage door.  No, it doesn't.   Now more than ever those in the highest levels of power who demand conversion therapy instead of HIV benefits, funerals for miscarried fetuses, and enabled discrimination in public accommodations against LGBTQ people should be confronted vociferously, peacefully and effectively with their bull**** in every possible venue.

Hats off to the Hamilton company and to Brandon who delivered an important message, respectfully and peacefully.   This is not a time for American voices to repress themselves in the name of some quaint notion that a curtain call isn't the place for politics.  The theatre has always been a place for politics and for political dissent.

The cast was clearly uncomfortable with Pence being there so I'm sure their energy was directed at him.

I dont see why Lin-Manuel Miranda thought it was appropriate to write a speech and have one of his cast members read it to Pence in front of everyone.

Trump is truly ridiculous. He's claiming Pence was harassed by the cast and demanding an apology. He's just trying to inflame his followers.

If he also complained when the KKK just had a parade to support him and when some off his fans have hung black dummies in their backyard, where were his tweets then? The cast was respectful in what they said. Period. Harassed? He doesn't even know what he is talking about.

On the wrong side as usual...I do hope the cast do not give in. There was nothing harassing with the statement at curtain call.  The boos maybe but that was the audience, nothing to do with the cast. Thank you Hamilton for addressing this the way you did!

Something that takes less than a minute to read  is hardly a "speech". It is a "statement".  In fact it reads as one, perhaps at most two, sentences, and says:

“We, sir — we — are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights,” he said. “We truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf all of us.”  (taken from NYT)

IMHO it is entirely appropriate and respectful. If people who opposed Obama these last 8 years were as respectful in opposition, then the world would be a beautiful place.  I think it is very hard in the current climate to just ignore the Pence appearance. He asserted his VIPness to get a ticket, and so he gets what comes with that. I applaud LMM for staying true to himself, his work, his performers in a way that maintained dignity and respect AND inclusiveness, including of VP Pence. I am also glad Pence saw the show. I DO believe in the power of art to uplift and to educate and open eyes. I don't expect anything from it, I am just saying....

Rather than get all huffy that Pence was booed, maybe what Trump should do is reassure those who are worried that they're about to lose a lot of rights that that isn't going to happen.

Maybe he should release a statement basically saying, "Hey, look, I know you're all worried, but don't be! I will work to preserve the rights of all Americans and Pence will do the same. None of you are losing anything, so don't worry and let's all work together to make America great."

Of course, Trump isn't going to do that, because he doesn't care what Pence does and doesn't care about the rights of anyone except the super-rich.  Americans are scared right now, and the Trump administration isn't addressing those fears - they're just getting offended and basically telling those frightened Americans to shut up.  That's not going to make things better.

I totally agree!

According to the NYT, a spokesman for the show confirmed that Pence stood in the hallway outside the main entrance to listen to the comments.  This election fanned the flames of racism, and Pence is in all likelihood is going to be the real policy maker in this administration. It is neither inappopriate nor wrong for an elected official to be forced to hear about the fears and concerns of his constituents.  Hamilton had an opportunity to speak directly to this man, free from reprisal, that most individuals will never have; especially persecuted minorities and immigrants.  It would have been irresponsible for Hamilton to have ignored this opportunity.

Pence was no ordinary ticket holder who deserved to be treated like everyone else.  Having been a part of the most-divisive campaign in modern history, he bears responsibility for the fanning flames of racism.  He is a man who signed laws designed to discriminate and ostracize from society the very actors he is watching.  He has exacerbated the public health crisis that BC/EFA is trying to fight.  His education policies have trashed arts education in Indiana.  After spending day and night fighting against the people and things the theatre community loves, he doesn't get to pretend as though none of it ever happened.

On a brighter note, #NameAPenceMusical just made my day.

This! Trump is ridiculous. This was the worst way to respond. He's just trying to cause more division. He's getting offended by AMERICANS stating their fear and anxiety when he should be doing their best to alleviate those fears. I don't really agree with the booing but the cast was respectful.

I find it a little ironic that Pence signed into legislation the right for business owners to refuse the LGBT community service based on religious reasons, but he has no problem letting the LGBT  community service...uhh, I mean perform for him.

As far as crowd reaction goes, I would like to think I would have taken the high road and not booed, but I can't be sure; and it's understandable for those who did. People, especially the Broadway community and theatre lovers, are sad, hurt, angry, and maybe even scared. It is their right to express how they feel. Pence is the Vice President elect which makes him a public servant. Politicians love to forget that; that they are elected to represent their constituents' ideals, not just their own. And even if ideals differ, every citizen should at least feel safe in their own country. So, the audience and cast had every right to express their concerns and it is his job to listen, whether it is crude or eloquent. And it was perfect timing. The future Vice President is not the most accessible person. It's not like they could schedule a business lunch with him next week, so they seized the moment.

Also, I don't think any Republican would be/has been booed for seeing Hamilton. As much as some people don't want to or fail to realize, this election was not about politics. It wasn't about conservatives versus liberals. It was about love versus hate, about sanity versus insanity, about hope versus fear. And unfortunately hate, insanity, and fear won. So why wouldn't there be a visceral reaction to one of the men that represent that?

Oh come on.  By the time the show was over Pence was still probably so worked up about how to get that King George into conversion therapy that he probably didn't hear a word of the speech.

Call me a conspiracy theories but I wouldn't be surprised if Trump sent Pence on purpose hoping for a negative reaction to distract the media from some recent problematic things he's been doing.  Seller said he asked for tickets yesterday afternoon which seems odd. His tweet screams of gas-lighting.

Gotta tell you, Us Trump people like all the protesting cry babies out there and now Hamilton who claims they will change America moving foward are starting to weaken little by little. We are getting underneath your skin now and that makes us happier than winning the Election. Whats the Matter Hamiltonians ? Did Trump and Pence take away your shot ?

I doubt that the average Hamilton viewer is team Trump. But still, wtf? This is some North Korea bs. Questioning the supreme leader draws instant backlash?

It should be pointed out that when Dick Cheney, of all people, attended Hamilton, the audience did not boo.

Only members of the new Trump administration engenders booing.

FWIW...

Yeah at least Dick Cheney accepts the fact he can't change his lesbian daughter while pence would just convert his children if they ever came out.
