I wasn't planning on seeing this show again, but if the dates they are performing are released or if they are performing the whole engagement, I'll be there.
This isn't a live stream ala SHE LOVES ME. This is being filmed ala RENT: LIVE!, INTO THE WOODS, COMPANY, etc so it will be done in typical form: 3 performances will be filmed and edited together.

I'm sure they not only wanted some of the original cast, but Jeremy Jordan's name has some good recognition and they probably wanted to build on that.

It's pretty par for the course though--at least for commercially released productions (which I suspect this will be) unlike, say, those Live from Lincoln Center broadcasts which usually film the current cast.
I mean did you feel sorry for the current casts of Sunday or Into the Woods who were unceremoniously replaced with the original cast when those shows were filmed?

"What would be the point of filming if their intention was to not release a DVD? "
There are other formats in which filmed performances can be released. For example, She Loves Me will be released only (as far as has been announced) on a streaming service, where you get the content over the internet and pay a new fee for each viewing. The Lincoln Centre productions that were filmed were broadcast once or twice on television but never made available for sale. Same with Legally Blonde. Something could in theory be sold only as a download. I would much prefer the archival dvd format over the three formats above, since it could be purchased and re-watched at convenience, without paying each time it's viewed or risking going over the monthly data limit on my internet plan, dealing with buffering issues, etc.

When you take into account the fact that MANY shows are taped with no intention to release a DVD of the performance, your seems ill-informed. I know this isn't the case, and that those numerous filmed productions have just slipped your mind, because you do seem like you follow theatre news quite regularly. It is, after all, easy to forget about these productions since they are filmed, shown once or twice, and then never (legally) see the light of day again.
Being Disney, I am sure this will get a DVD release. Disney is all about profit, and not so much about getting art to the people like Lincoln Center or the National Theatre.
Is it also easy to forget a majority of those filmed productions were for the Lincoln Center Archives and never put out a press release that they were filming it? There are few instances of a production saying they're filming (especially when bringing original cast back) and nothing coming of it.

Well, the tour cast members who are being sidelined are still going to get paid. It's not like they are going to be in a position where they're loosing money. For example, Billy Porter is from Pittsburgh. When the Kinky Boots tour played in Pittsburgh, Porter played Lola for that stop on tour. However, the main person playing Lola (who's name currently escapes me now,) still got paid as if they were performing even though they didn't.

Was his name Kyle? Didn't Kyle replace billy on Broadway while Billy replaced him on tour?
