Can I just say that I'm honestly surprised by the positive reaction here? I'm not disparaging Anderson, I just had NO idea that she had this kind of following! I hope she's everything you all hope she will be!
Has Traci Lords done Chicago? I became obsessed with her story after listening to the true crime podcast about her last year. From trafficked teen, to the biggest porn star in the world, to FBI informant, to electronica goddess, and then John Waters’s muse… that’s a career with legs.
The positive response surpasses even this message board. I know people who NEVER see Broadway shows and are looking to buy tickets this week in case “it sells out completely.” I’ve never seen this reaction from them so it’s refreshing. Looks like the Weisslers scored big with this one. Also, they’ve been trying to have her join the show for about a decade but scheduling was always an issue. She’s a self-proclaimed fan of Bob Fosse, Gwen Verdon, and Ann Reinking. She’s also been a lifelong fan of musicals.
Looking at their schedule, it looks like her first week has 10 shows. Woof. Welcome to Broadway!

Pay The Hoff in cheeseburgers, if necessary, because this needs to happen.

Pam is by far the most sympathetic and interesting character in it and Lily James is SCARY good. But the whole thing, unfortunately, is clouded by Pam’s disapproval. Because they make the violation and lack of consent the central theme, them carrying on without Pam’s permission makes it feel pretty hollow.
Anyhow, this casting news has me so excited! I’m debating whether I should buy a ticket for her opening night. While I’m sure the excitement will be palpable, I’m worried she might end up needing more rehearsal time and need to postpone. Or if everything goes according to schedule, she might need some shows under her belt to settle in. A conundrum."
It's interesting to me because I've found the critical reviews very positive for James, lukewarm for Stan and lukewarm towards the entire series. Viewers feedback on social media being far less positive, namely that the show is poorly written and terribly paced, as well as boring. I found it boring as well. How ones makes porn and icons boring is beyond me. I find it a slog to get through.
As far as James performance, I'm on the fence. She is encased in so much latex, for me it is such a disconnect. Is the performance a revelation or the makeup FX? To me, Pam is portrayed as warm and sympathetic but like many actors thirsty for awards recognition, James leans into a lot of mannerisms Pam used in interviews and public appearances, so when she is shown in her private life I don't feel we are seeing a grounded and balanced portrayal. I think she is far more intelligent than she is shown here. I feel like her and especially Tommy are portrayed as simpletons. Tommy has almost no complexity, which may be true but it doesn't dramatize well.
Also, when the series is supposedly telling about the trauma Pam endured and continues to, it feels very icky what the creators are doing with this project. Creating more trauma and exploitation.
In contrast, I felt like American Crime Story: Impeachment created real tension and disgust during Monica's detainment and questioning. The episode with Pam being questioned by lawyers felt superficial and provocative. I wasn't believing it.

Not in a week, she has ten shows in a row. A Broadway week runs Mon-Sun. Chicago just so happens to have shows on Mondays.
I'm rooting for Pam hard - she's been treated like sh!t like everyone else has mentioned. However, that Santa Baby panto clip is not promising. Not trying to be disparaging but nothing in that video would indicate that she can do more than breathy Marilyn Monroe like singing and could carry 10 shows a week. But I'm prepared to have my expectations subverted and I seriously hope she kills it. She could use a win.
That breathy Marilyn Monroe singing will be perfectly fine for Roxie.

Well I meant week as in the measure of time, not a “Broadway week.” The 12th through the 19th with 10 shows and no day off. That’s tough for anyone, especially a first timer. I wonder if she’ll do every show.
We need Gina Gershon or Kim Basinger

God and some of the best plastic Hollywood can buy.
DAAAAAAAAAMN, PAM!!!!!
She's gonna sell a ton of tickets! When was the last time Chicago had a celebrity come in and sellout the theater on a regular basis?
