For everyone clamoring for Lady Gaga to play the role, and I ask this in all seriousness, has she done anything that shows or even hints that she has the comedic chops to pull it off? I admit that the only thing I've seen her act in is her appearances on American Horror Story (yes, I've still yet to see A Star Is Born), so I can't say I've seen her do any really impressive acting, let alone anything remotely funny. I don't doubt that she would sing it well, but do people really think that she'd pull off the comedy, or is she being cast simply because she's not Leah Michelle (who I also don't think is nearly funny enough to pull it off either).

I have seen A Star Is Born. While I think she is good, no, I don't think she has the comedic chops to pull off this role. Just because someone can sing the songs doesn't mean they should play the role. Lady Gaga sang a beautiful arrangement of some songs from The Sound Of Music, but should she play Maria? Absolutely not. I don't think she should go near Fanny either.
Watch Gaga’s episode of SNL. She is quite funny. The magic of Gaga is that every time she does something new, everyone doubts that she can do it. And then she nails it.
She would need a good director.
However, I don’t believe this rumor is true. Gaga is extremely busy when other projects and has cut way back on touring. With her fibromyalgia, she can’t perform for long stretches of time. Her next tour is only six dates, worldwide. I don’t think this rumor was ever true.
Or, to the extent there was any truth to it, that it was Rosie publicly gossiping about a "wouldn't that be great?" conversation she'd once had with Gaga, hoping some producer would pick up the ball. It's not the first time anyone's tried; some have even succeeded.
You know, FUNNY GIRL isn't that good a show. It has a terrific score but the book is clunky. That Streisand Woman somehow blinded people to the show's problems.

When Jerome Robbins was brought in to retool the show, he flat out stated that the show would only succeed if it solely focused on Streisand/Fanny. Anytime she wasn’t on stage, the show would lag so he structured it as The Barbra Streisand Show. Jean Stapleton has stated that the entire cast knew this was the only hope for the show to succeed so they sat quietly as many scenes and roles were trimmed or simply cut. She says the entire cast accepted this. Streisand has talked about being on Demarol during her entire run to battle her stress and anxiety from being responsible for carrying the show. She was almost 22 years old when FUNNY GIRL opened on Broadway.

Wow! Streisand was extremely young when she did the show. I can only imagine the pressure being put on her at such a young age to carry a major Broadway musical. The success or failure rested squarely on her shoulders!
That being said, I am surprised they are considering much older actresses to take on the role. I believe that at the beginning of the show "Fanny" is either 17 or 18, and even though Streisand "got away" with it on stage she clearly doesn't in the film with her Egyptian liquid eyeliner and fingernails "out to there".

^She's been teasing it a lot, too. She's hinted at a Broadway return on many of her Instagram lives and when she was recently on Seth Rudetsky's podcast he ended the episode by saying "Bye Rosie, see you on broadway!".
I'd be thrilled to see this, with or without Gaga. She'd definitely be my first pick for the role but she's much too busy, especially with her new album, tour that's happening at some point in the future, Vegas residency, and new film.
I guess are chances of Lea Michele are nil now. Even though back a couple months ago she had said as well about a return in spring 2021.
I wouldn’t mind a Gaga version. But I think idina May have aged out of the role by now. I do think that it definitely has to be “star” led as well to carry that show. And with the current environment I’m gonna say it has to be some recording artist/ film star in that role

She can return to mop the stage.

The Lea M "Funny Girl" rumors have been around for about 8/9 years.
Lady Gaga headlining a Broadway show, let alone FG isn't going to happen. Those rumors are almost 2 years old now, and started right before "A Star Is Born" came out. As if because, since she did a remake of Barbra's movie, that must mean, she's going to do another Barbra role, as well? It just doesn't make any sense.
Then the Idina M rumors started late last year. Like LG, just doesn't make any sense.

But, she would have if she lived in the 1960s.

I'm trying to find where I read it, possibly a quote from her daughter Frances, that offstage Fanny was always immaculately coiffed ,beautifully manicured, and dressed in the latest fashions. Anybody??
Rosie and Woopie in The Odd Couple would sell a few tickets.
I think that when sit down entertainment resumes there has to be shows presented that are totally out of left field so that instead of the usuals just resuming go with unexpected casting in familiar shows with smaller casts, short seasons, reduced prices and EVERYONE taking pay cuts[including the theatres] to reduce expenses to gradually get the doors open again.
Put Hugh Jackman in I do I do, the above The Odd Couple etc.etc. Work with the unions and discuss a simple plan to get the General Public/Tourist $s back at the box office.
It's not feasible to just reopen every Broadway house with the same blockbusters. Test run with STARS to regain audience confidence. Even concert performances with a set ticket price with the star donating their talent to get things moving again with reduced seating. Every performer/backstage staff has to make more financial sacrifices to gradually begin the 'back to normal'. Shows can be rehearsing at the same time but at least front of house is getting practice, audiences are re-conditioning and outside businesses are benefiting by increased foot traffic.
Trial runs, otherwise it will be a total cluster fxxk.

I've heard similar things--Pauline Kael references something like this in her review of Funny Lady. But not a direct statement from someone who knew her.
Rosie was just on Stars in the House and mentioned that she'll be doing this when Broadway reopens. Do we think it'll actually happen? And do we want it to? I want Funny Girl, but I don't think I want Rosie in it. Sorry, Rosie.
