We've been in hell ever since Bowie died. The rest of time has been a punishment for humanities heinous acts that we've committed.
I hope Vosk gets a better wig because that thing on her head in the press photo is horrible!!!

and I suppose Vanities is transferring next.
If Versailles was raking in over $1M a week, this can too. I see all sisters and mother/daughter dates lining up. What I don’t understand is that I have not heard “Wind Beneath My Wings” in that Calgary clip or mentioned anywhere. Isn’t that chart topper in this musical? Why the hell not lead with that?

I see your point, but Versailles only had two weeks of breaking $1M.

This is amazing and WILL be the theater event of the season! A cheap looking musical based on a 40 year old movie with two people no one has ever heard of outside of the Theater District! Yes!

Do not overestimate this IP. We’ve seen far bigger movies have disastrous sales on Broadway.
QOV made $1 million a week for two weeks only. And Schwartz and Chenoweth are a bigger combo than any element of this show.
Yes, that song is included in the show. The NYT sub-header leads with that.
Sisters and mother/daughter duos will also have the opportunity to attend & Juliet, Two Strangers, Titanique, and Chess. And til then they have Mamma Mia. Girlfriends and mothers did not sustain L5Y, Lft on Tenth, Boop, Redwood, Once Upon, Diana, Amelie, or Bright Star. This is not 1991 and this show is not SECRET GARDEN (nor is this show BEAUTIFUL or WAITRESS).

I believe in the NYT article is says "Wind Beneath my Wings" is in the show. If indeed it isn't, I'm sure they will go the way of Shrek/I'm a Believer, and add it. Although, they never added "You Don't Own Me" to either of the versions of First Wives Club, so who knows

And personal feelings about her recent comments aside, Versailles got the attention and money it did because of Cheno. Neither of the Beaches ladies generate enough buzz in name alone to clear even a single week of 1 million.
Plus, as we've seen with Versailles and any number of buzzy Broadway star led revivals, initial buzz only sustains if word of mouth is good. Movie stars can keep their shows running even with middling reviews. Broadway names need the reviews in combination with the name or it all falls apart.

All I can see is Natasha Lyonne - she’s really just missing a cigarette in her hand.

In the words of our Broadway Dame, Jinkx Monsoon, re: wigs - it looks like they tried to tease it, but they just pissed it off.

If only it was based on the movie...
Vosk keeps attaching herself to flops. Such a shame

Someone else may have already said this, in which case I missed it, but I wonder whether -- between this and Titanique -- we are seeing the 'official' start of a new model...the show that opens on Broadway as the first stop in a national tour. I don't understand the economics, but the fact that they can advertise 'directly from Broadway', as someone has previously proposed -- may make them more appealing on the road and increase grosses. I don't know whether it costs a lot less to open a musical with (presumably) cheaper sets and costumes, or the fact that it is a limited engagement gets any union concessions, but there has to something that makes it economically viable. Are the Shuberts and the owners of the St. James also serious investors in the road tours, in which case thedrastically reduced cost of the theatre for a limited engagement (when it would otherwise have been empty) may also dramatically reduce the weekly breakeven?????

Is it a new model? I said this in the Mama Mia thread but bringing tours to Broadway has always been something producers fell back on in downturns. Happened in the 70s. Happened in the 90s.
Even starting with Broadway to then tour isn't really new as much as it a rejiggering of the earlier model. Some would argue that certain shows in the last decade or so only went to Broadway to raise attention for tours.

Broadway could also serve as the last stop on an Equity tour, too.
Are they closing off the balcony?

There there is no balcony at this theater, but I’m sure they’ll close off the rear mezzanine. And maybe the rear Orchestra. And maybe the front mezzanine. And maybe the mid orchestra.
This ain't running through September....:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(749x0:751x2):format(webp)/beaches-on-broadway-121625-3a67855588f74089a70f233bae75fcd3.jpg)
I wonder what the total absolute breakeven for this is. Like how small of houses can it play to. Seems like a wild swing, but they must have crunched the numbers. And it's likely to snag a "best musical" nomination, so maybe it's worth it.

You know, I will say one nice thing about Beaches and Titanique coming in: I enjoy getting new cast albums of Broadway shows. Mindelle and Vosk would be welcome additions to my playlists.

Damn. Broadway is really f**ked if this is the kind of show that gets the Majestic. The Tony Awards is going to be like a funeral.
