Jackman and Sutton would be an interesting Sweeney and Lovett together; after seeing Younger, I can really see Sutton Foster as the charming yet conniving oddball Lovett.
When I saw this title I thought FINALLY! Bernadette Peters and Brian Stokes Mitchell. i really don’t understand the interest of Audra as Lovett. If anything I see her as a Beggar Woman. Personally I’d love to hear Lea Salonga as the Beggar Woman (which I know she’d never consider a supporting role). But like a Denee Benton or Laura Osnes as Joanna. And Johnathan Groff as Anthony. Patrick Page as the Judge. Issac Powell as Tobias.

Osnes is certainly not gonna be in this show, or probably any other Broadway production for the rest of her career. Like the idea of Page and Benton.
I'm not sure how fresh faced they'd want Toby to be, but I feel Ethan Slater could be excellent.
I feel like Groban can do this. Ashford will be solid, but not inspired and given how grand an occasion a Sweeney revival would be, I understand the hesitation.
I'd love to see Heather Headley do it.
And like, have they asked Chenoweth or Menzel? They'd sell tickets and tear into it.
Also, as for the suggestion that Lea Salonga wouldn't accept a supporting role, her role in Once on This Island was much smaller than the Beggar Woman.

The double-edged sword of casting a star of that magnitude. Might even be better off not trying to replace him and just closing after he leaves. Nobody else is going to sell that many tickets, and few others will want to follow in his footsteps.

I know I posted this in the other thread but I just want the record there of the journey should it ever happen - Bernadette and Stokes or Bernadette and Mandy could of course be considered as replacements. I just hope Bernadette can still do the role. I don’t know what her voice is like these days but I might get a glimpse of it in that London Sondheim concert next month to tell.
Also maybe whoever is paying the bills might turn around at the 11th hour and say they need another star so it isn’t all on Groban (see: great Comet).
i know I am so desperate and it won’t happen but please god between the pandemic, Sondheim dying, Ukraine make this last dream of Bernadette playing Lovett come true and I can die knowing I have lived a full life.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I felt she had difficulty physically getting through Dolly. I sadly don't think she could handle this, sadly.

I think the casting has a lot of potential. They’re younger than how I imagine the roles, but it’s probably more period accurate. I actually think Annaleigh can bring a lot of depth and grit when given the opportunity (Dogfight, Impeachment) and will obviously nail the kooky bits. I just hope they hire a good dialect coach because her Kinky Boots accent was ROUGH. Groban will sound glorious and I actually think he’s got a lot of untapped potential as an actor. I’m most curious what this production’s take on the piece will be. Size, design, tone, etc. This casting suggests it’ll take some big swings.

It is indeed based on the movie, with a book by David Thompson. Score is all Kander and Ebb trunk songs, some from almost every show. (I've even heard the entire estate is frozen for a minute for first class productions, until this comes in.)
Was years ago developed as a tourist show for the Theatre at MSG, but was picked back up pre-pandemic by Stro and Thompson and fleshed out, using the trunk songs. Adrienne Warren was in the workshop.
re: New York, New York. In addition to Adrienne Warren, one of the MUNY Chicago stars was also in the workshop. And it seems like they both may continue with a Broadway run. =)
If nothing else, it should be an exciting cast of powerhouse performers
Adrienne Warren would be quite the get for this show but I have a hard time seeing her committing to another Broadway run — in a show of trunk songs with a Director who hasn’t had a hit in 20 years — so soon after Tina.
I think that Groban could sing the role, but acting... maybe? I don't know if Ashord is the right age, but she has the comedic chops. I would KILL for Patrick Page as Turpin!

Do I think Ashford and Groban would be fine. Am I excited by the pairing? Not particularly. They both have some major shtick they need to tone down to find the darkness. Do I think Kail as director can manage that? Not particularly. And god help us if he brings in Blankenbuehler to modernize the movement. No one needs nonstop jerky movement during Johanna.

Am I the only one excited to see Ashford's take on Lovett? I am assuming it would be bringing back the role to Lansbury's original more comedic take on the character. I know in all subsequent productions the role has grown darker and become essentially a musical version of Lady MacBeth for actresses to sink their teeth into, but the original production was mounted as a dark comedy. If there's one thing Ashford's great at its bringing heart and edge to larger than life comedic performances, which is very much in line with Lansbury's original performance. Her wit and timing always have me laughing one minute, then asking "Wait should I be laughing at this?, the next, which I think is perfect for Lovett.
Also her casting clearly isn't set in stone because if B Positive is renewed for a third season (which I am assuming is unlikely at this point due to Asford's alleged attachment, and the fact it ended its season early), she won't be able to do both.

This post is begging for a dramatic reading by Jesse Tyler Ferguson.
