I cannot stop watching that clip. I am so excited for this show. Sunset has been one of my favorite musicals for many, many years, but I can also acknowledge there has been some really clunker productions, but I’m so jazzed that a version is running now that people are LOVING.

I can't remember where I saw it, but a few days there was video of something being done on the roof of the St. James and someone suggested that may be a contingency plan (have him wander around up there?).

I read an interview online a few days ago in which Tom Francis said he was accompanied by two police officers as well as security. I don’t see any cops  in that clip.

What I want to know is, who is TweetyPie1?

Is there anything about this production that I would miss from the $69 rear balcony seats? I'm eyeing a spur-of the-moment trip to see this but I'd need to do it on the cheap.

You should be fine seeing things. The screen may be a little warped, people have said when it tilts that heads look disproportioned. Being closer would be worth it to see facial expressions in my mind. I was mid-mezz and just far enough back that I wish I had been able to see all the nuance up close. With such a minimal stage it's all about the actors.

I of course want everything about this production to be perfect and successful…but I just think the semantics of that title number will be different at 9:30 PM on a Saturday in October than at 3:30 PM on a Wednesday in June.

For the balcony just buy a small pair of inexpensive binoculars.  For about $20 a good investment for future theatre going.

As you can clearly see in the video, there are spotters surrounding the actor and cameraman so they are moving and blocking people. Also, there’s a team clearing the path in advance. Any weirdo trying to be cute will be stopped in seconds. It’s not just the actor and cameraman alone on the street.

Might something unexpected happen? Sure. But they've had weeks to observe and plan for various scenarios.

During the London run I observed the scene getting much more attention and crowds towards the end of the run and they seemed to be able to manage it just fine...

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Interesting about them prepping the roof of the St James. I wonder what type of situation would lead to them moving the title song there, though. IE, if the weather on the street won’t allow for walking there, the weather on the roof would be the same.

I also never knew there was an inner atrium for the windows of the offices above the theatre. But makes total sense.

Spoiler alerts warning, please. Trying to go into this as fresh as possible next week.

After a six month run in London a year ago, many people don’t consider things spoiler-alert-worthy I guess.

Will be interesting once winter arrives and performing the Act 2 opener outside in snow conditions etc.? We are seeing this with some friends the Friday before the opening along with Tammy in October, Cabaret & Death Becomes Her in November and Gypsy in December!!!

Abstaining from reading the thread about previews of the show sounds like a good approach.

I've only seen the Olivier Awards performance of the song, but I assume they HAVE to have a contingency option that remains fully indoors, and/or an option that just avoids the street outside. Be it rain/thunder/lightning, or snow, or smog, or police/fire activity in front of the theatre, or just a lot of noise that would ruin the moment.

Sorry to post here as well since I posted in the other thread, but I’m genuinely curious and haven’t seen anyone discussing this:

Since Norma and Max are about the same age in this production (official casting call for this production says they’re both 40s and David is younger than Nicole) have they changed all the dialogue/lyrics about Max meeting Norma at 16 and directing all her early pictures?

If Norma is 16 when she starts acting and Max is around the same age, it seems like they’d have to change the backstory about him “making her a star” and “directing all her early pictures” if they were *both* teens/young adults then.

Normally I’d say this is just a suspension of disbelief thing and we’re meant to believe he is older than her, but Jamie Lloyd seems to have very explicitly made them the same age, aging down Norma by 10 years and Max by 20 years.

it appears that there was some work done on the roof including a platform for times when the street is inaccessible. I agree that they probably need a Plan C for if they really can't go outside. IDK how hearty the West End is. But, on Broadway, the show must go on. I've definitely seen shows during blizzards.

When I saw it in London, it was raining and they still did the title song with the umbrella.

For those who saw it in NY, did they pump in a ridiculous amount of theatrical haze in the stage/auditorium? That left quite an impression on me as I entered the Savoy.

I also remember when walking into the Savoy, it was the most dimly lit auditorium I have ever entered. It was so dark I couldn't read the program I purchased. I wonder if that is just something about the Savoy or London in general, or if it was a choice by Jamie Lloyd for the production?

LOTS of theatrical haze is used on Broadway. I also noticed the house seemed VERY dark in the theatre upon entering last night.
