There is scaffolding with lights and fog machines in the wings that encroach onto the stage, shrinking the width. It's a deep stage at times, but when the screen comes down and tilts toward the audience it shrinks a LOT. This helps as there are no sets or props at all beyond a chair here and there.

I actually feel like the stage looks huge, at least in this picture-Scherzinger in SUNSET BLVD. Previews

Slightly reminds me of the latest Chicago revival (which has been around forever, yes).  Everyone in black, mostly.  Not much set.  The voices and acting carry the show?   I cannot wait!

I mean if the cast is going outside to a "modern" Times Square, it sort of would seem out of place in the original 1950's? Tickets bought for it and "Redwood". Yay!"

It's ambiguous. Yes, in present day without changing the text, like when conceptualizing a classic to a different time.

One thing I want to give this production major props on is the impeccable sound design. The orchestra sounded so lush and full, and the words and lyrics were always audible. It felt like surround sound in my ears.

An exciting second preview -- Piere Marais makes his debut as understudy Cecil B. Demille, and swings Brandon LaVar + Kristina Doucette make their debuts in the ensemble tracks of 'Stan / Finance Man' and 'Jean', respectively!

The year 1949 is projected onto the stage at the start of the show.

Not sure if this was mentioned but balcony seating is closed for all Tuesday performances when Mandy Gonzalez is Norma!

I just got home. That was ****ing incredible. I did not expect any of that. I’ve seen the original and the concert version. Jamie Lloyd had such a unique and distinct vision for this and he really pulled it off. This is not at all the Sunset from 30 years ago. It was thrilling and terrifying.

Get tickets now. I imagine this will be the talk of the town.

WOW! WOW! WOW! Absolutely lived up to the hype. This is something special and absolutely worth seeing as soon as you can from the best seats you can afford. So glad I went for orchestra (at least for this first viewing; yes, I absolutely intend to go back).

This show is kinda like a movie and a stage musical had a baby, which feels like what such a hollywood-anchored show should feel. So many powerful and striking images. The Shubert Alley walk went perfectly and was incredible to witness. I'm curious to see what they will do starting tomorrow when they misalign with all the other shows. For an 8 pm show, the walk happens around 9:40. That's right when a 7 pm Hell's Kitchen will be getting out and right around or after several other 44th and 45th street shows get out.

There was truly not a weak link among this cast. All four leads are phenomenal and perfect for their parts. Nicole does stand above the rest though. Her vocals are beyond outstanding. Her performance is beautiful and bizarre. The perfect combination for Norma. I really didn't realize how much humor and weirdness there would be in this show, but I loved it.

Stage door was mobbed, as can be expected. Nicole and Grace did NOT come out tonight, but everybody else did. I was disappointed, but I am fully in support of actors' right to not come out and grateful for everyone who did. Sticking it to the autograph dealers is always a bonus too when that happens. What I will say is that they kept us there for quite a while after the last person (Tom) came out before telling us nobody else was coming. IDK if they decided not to come out last minute or if there was miscommunication or something. But, I do feel like there could be a better system for alerting the door staff/security that someone isn't coming out. Not the biggest deal. But I did feel more peeved about waiting 20 minutes after Tom came out than Nicole and Grace not coming out.

For real. There will be a reasonable group that won't like this, but it will be the 'event' of the year that everyone has to see to be able to talk about.

The sound design for Jamie Lloyd’s productions is always AMAZING.

On the UK boards, someone posted that Tom Francis "comes in through a fire exit into the orchestra stalls and onto the stage" for the finale of the title song. To those who have seen this at the St James, does he enter the orchestra section at house right, or house left?

He enters from the sidewalk through a house left exit door around orchestra row O, and walks down the far left aisle to the stage.

I understood that Mandy is playing the role on Tuesday evenings, but that apparently doesn’t start until after the show officially opens.

Thanks! When you say he "walks down the far left aisle to the stage" do you literally mean far left, i.e., the aisle at the left wall of the orchestra, or do you mean the aisle that separates orchestra left from orchestra center?

Hi all! I have an extra ticket to tonight’s (Tuesday’s) performance in Orch Row O seat 7. True name-your-price scenairo as I’m out of folks who I know to give the ticket to. Feel free to message me and we can set something up. (also apologies if this request isn’t within the parameters of this forum!)

Really excited to check this production out, never been huge on Sunset Blvd as a musical but this seems like something special.

I felt a little robbed sitting house left at Doll’s House and missed the big exit reveal. Any house right / left preferences for this production?

I can’t wait to see the box office numbers over next couple months - it’s a real test for whether this apparent strong word of mouth can ignite a soft box office. They managed to practically sell out the first preview, last night mostly sold by curtain time. Same for tonight. But in general the advance is a little weak.

In London it also was a little bit weak initially but after a while it was basically sold out for the entire run. However, it was only a short run whereas it’s longer here and they have more tickets to sell each night.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
