I am freaking the freak out! That was SOOOOOO beautiful, and I want that poster. BIG TIME. Every synapse I have is firing with excitement!
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
While I had the same thought, LOTS of young peeps do not know this show - even theater kids. As I have said to my of my students, this is the Rent of the older generation.

Also, there’s singing and dancing in the trailer. It’s a two minute snippet of the film which would make adding little clips of songs very hard to fit in and “sound” right.

That was my immediate thought also. You have no clue it is a musical from this trailer.
"
I disagree. It was pretty obvious to me that this is a musical - even if I didn't know what WSS was (for anyone to not know that WSS is musical would certainly be long shot). Although, we certainly all have our own interpretations of the trailer, and they are definitely all valid opinions.
I am curious to hear your thoughts as to why you had no clue it was a musical film based on this particular trailer.
I’m glad this isn’t a shot for shot remake. The new dialogue took me by surprise. Rachael has a good voice! Rita looks as beautiful as she was 60 years ago
Loved that trailer. And I disagree that people won’t know this is a musical. The very beginning of the trailer has singing, which occurs throughout, as does the dancing.
It looks so good! Beautiful sets, costumes and cinematography. I love the way it's lit. It looks period but with modern sensibilities. What I've been looking forward to the most is how they've adapted the story, and it seems like a whole new script. I love that we get to see and hear things in this version that the 1961 film and the stage musical didn't touch upon or expand on. For instance, we see the Sharks lighting a candle for Bernardo's death.
I know the trailer was probably edited to showcase more of Maria's story because of Ansel, but I wish we would've seen some things from Tony's perspective. Also, I like that Black people are also in this and we see the Puerto Ricans aren't the only minority group that the Jets hate. That shot of Anita walking away from the police station (?) and then telling Maria "If you go with him, no one will ever forgive you" were everything! I felt like I was the one being scolded haha. Loved the shots of various musical numbers that were shown, including I Feel Pretty, America, One Hand, One Heart and what I think may be Cool (the shot where Riff and Tony struggle for the gun). I don't know why, but I have the feeling that the Somewhere Ballet will not be in this version.
In terms of whether they are hiding that it's a musical -- I don't think they are? There's singing and choreographed dancing. I think this trailer focused more on story and characters. In the Heights's trailers focused on the music, but you couldn't tell what the story was about.

Lol. At least October and November will have Dune, The French Dispatch, Last Night in Soho, Belfast, House of Gucci, Spencer, Tick Tick Boom! and Licorice Pizza to tide me over until this comes out.
I’m sure there will be different trailers coming out, like IN THE HEIGHTS had. I’m sure we can expect an “America” trailer, etc. I’m sure this was the Maria trailer.
