Just when you thought it was safe to go back in a theater…
The behind-the-scenes drama The Shark is Broken is currently slated to begin previews at the John Golden Theatre tomorrow (July 25), before an August 10 opening night. The three-person show — about the making of the 1975 movie “Jaws” — stars Alex Brightman, Colin Donnell, and Ian Shaw. The Shark is Broken is co-written by Shaw and Joseph Nixon and directed by Guy Masterson; it will play a limited run through November 19.
“Fade in: the open ocean, 1974. Filming is delayed… again. The lead actors — theatre veteran Robert Shaw and young Hollywood hotshots Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider — are crammed into a too-small boat, entirely at the mercy of foul weather and a faulty mechanical co-star. Alcohol flows, egos collide, and tempers flare on a chaotic voyage that just might lead to cinematic magic… if it doesn’t sink them all.”
Smoking is completely appropriate for this plays setting, and the real people.it portrays.
Also considering the popularity of vaping, and smoking pot being legal in many places (and common place regardless of legality) I don't really see smoking as any less popular in 2023 anyway. Just because it's not tabacco doesn't mean there aren't issues with these alternatives.

Probably because Scheider with a cigarette in his mouth is one of the most iconic reaction shots in cinema history.
Regardless of if the character smokes in the play, re-creating that image in marketing will hammer home to even causal audiences what the play is.

Think of the children that will never see that and be unduly influenced!
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Really? You're going to "double down" on a bizarre comment?

LOL. Him smoking is the very first thing you see in the play, and he continues to have a cigarette in his mouth for almost the entire show.

Eh
I was there tonight. A few amusing anecdotes. Quite a lot on the conflict between Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss but I don't feel like I learned anything I didn't know reading a few articles.

Oh, Roy does smoke in the show"
Sounds like it remains the same mediocre production.
