I am SO HAPPY Strange Loop won Best Musical, but it should have won more! I was expecting more from the Tonys this year, but I was SO WRONG! I haven't been this disappointed since the Band's Visit upset of 2018. Congrats to all the winners and I hope (in a way) more people will come to NYC! Let's hope next season will be better!"
TBV was the expected winner in 2018. It wasn’t an upset.

It kinda was, everyone was expecting Mean Girls to win big as well as Ethan Slater winning Best Actor, but that did not happen. I have come to see why TBV won back in 2018, but still. I was disappointed in tonight's ceremony and the fact that MJ won so many awards makes me sad. Strange Loop deserved so much more in the creative categories as well as Jaquel for Best Actor. I just hope next season is better, but we always say that at the end of every Broadway season.
The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince
Vocally everyone sounded strained. Is performing 8x a week after 2 years off just getting to everyone? Interesting that no one really had terrific vocals.

A few had rehearsal, and a show, and red carpet and then Tony performance. It's not easy.

After the past few years of steamroller Best Musicals, I do like all the wealth-spreading tonight. It helps illustrate the lowercase-d diversity of the musicals this season.
The camera work was AWFUL!!!! The uber closeups. The cut to audience members watching the performers. Why? Give the performers their due. Nobody needs to see an audience member WATCHING a performance. The odd cuts from one angle to another. Lordy! Please do not bring the same director back next year. It was very amateur hour. Simon Beale's speech was I thought the best. And let the In Memoriam be just that. It seemed secondary to Billy Porter's.....who I will say rocked the Bride of Frankenstein look...........performance with close ups! AGAIN with the closeups!
A weird night and weird broadcast for a weird season. Even the “surprise” wins weren’t that surprising since there wasn’t a lot of consensus on a lot of categories.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
A few days ago I saw a link on one of these threads to an hour-long video with interviews of and performances by several nominees, including Jacquel doing “Inner White Girl” and Joaquina doing “Let it Burn.” Sorry, but I can’t find it now…does anyone have the link? Thanks!

CBS was so sure Tina Fey was winning Best Book in 2018 that they televised the category when score was left to the commercial breaks. TBV was not the assumed favorite for that award but carried it in the sweep.
You don't think Jacquina's performance and win did anything to keep it going ?"
There has never been in the history of Broadway a single Tony performance that has saved a show that cannot manage to pay back its original investment plus 25% more invested after. It would take years of sold out houses at top ticket prices to do so.
It also wouldn't take long for audiences to catch up and realize that her performance is the only worthy part of the whole event, and they already saw it.

A Strange Loop (which I loved) won Best Musical and only one other award, Best Book. Is there any other Best Musical winner that won so few awards overall? (I'm aware of several plays, including Clybourne Park and Vanya and Sonya... that won Best Play and nothing else.)
Did anyone else find it a little too convenient that Cynthia Erivo and Danielle Brooks presented Best Actress, as if Joaquina's win was anticipated, since they both starred with her in The Color Purple?
While Ariana is very charismatic, her voice is kind of middling. Parts of it sound very good, but then her head voice is nonexistent. It's interesting to see how she's fooled people into thinking she's a better singer than she actually is. She's a magnetic host despite that.
