While I think it only matters so much, it's great to see LGBT actors take on LGBT roles. Sometimes "playing gay" can get iffy, and I guess it could go the other way around. It's just nice to see. :)"
Yeah you got to it before I did. I think of it like classic Hollywood whitewashing — here’s some great queer roles, but producers are worried about money, so let’s get famous straight guys to play the role. With sexuality there’s way more flexibility than with race, but the idea still stands and it’s nice to have gay men playing the parts that they’re born to play, just like it was nice to have Beth Malone playing Alison in Fun Home.
The casting ranges from inspired (Robin de Jesus as Emory especially, and Bomer seems an ideal Donald) to "ok" (Andrew Rannells will no doubt do just fine as Larry, but nothing that we haven't seen from AR before; in fact Larry seems the most Whizzer-like of the "Boys" to hmmm, what will that be like exactly (as I mentioned before, I'd be much more interested in Parsons as Harold and Quinto as Michael than the other way around but I still think Mantello might be on to something very interesting - and, yes, I can see Parsons as Harold).
I have a trip planned in late April and saved a spot for this show expecting it to open before the Tony deadline. now my April 28 slot looks like it might be too early. Any idea that previews might start before the April 30th date mentioned in the article?
I'm assuming that Jim Parsons' taping schedule for The Big Bang Theory has something to do with the late-April start. Similarly, An Act of God began previews on May 7, 2015.
With a cast of openly gay actors (certainly a first time for Broadway), would a straight actor as Cowboy make any sense? Having just watched FALSETTOS on Great Performances, it was still obvious to me that Christian Borle was not gay, although his performance was better than it had been early on in the run. Love Christian but he didn't quite convince as a troubled gay man.

I would cry. Please, Theatre God."
While I love him, he is too old for the part. Ben Platt would work "
In what world is Ben Platt "too pretty"? He's not my kind but I don't nearly see him as being dreamy in any way.
There are about 10,000 actors in NYC perfectly suitable for the role. I agree with Kad - it probably won't be a name. Doesn't need to be. It's a small part and as it is, the expense of putting up this production with the announced cast is going to be high.
Caption: Every so often there was a rare moment of perfect balance when I soared above him.
@the person who said that Borle clearly wasn't gay in Falsettos: why? I don't think gay has a specific look or behavior. You don't need to play into stereotype to play gay. I though it was very believable due to his chemistry with Rannells. He doesn't need to be a sassy hairdresser in pink to be believable as gay. Regardless, I do like to see LGBTQ+ performers representing their community on stage and screen and I think this is wonderful casting. Hopefully we'll see an unknown as cowboy.
