This could have been written by me! Got off the plane Friday, headed straight to the St James and got an ITW ticket for that night. And I snagged a PV Company ticket for today a couple weeks ago - I've been to a first preview of a show but never a closing!

I would love to see she and BP in a revival of Over Here. The Andrews Sisters sang the opening number together and each had a couple of other songs, so I don’t think it’d be too difficult for them. It was a joyous show with lots or roles for newcomers (unknown Travolta, Treat Williams and Ann Reinking were all in the opening cast) and Janie Sell won a Tony Award in a very funny role that morphed into the third sister. Maybe Roundabout or at least Encores. The pastiche score is wonderfully entertaining.
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
God, I loved this revival so much. Easily one of the highlights in my lifetime of theatergoing. Impeccably perfect in every single aspect. I feel very fortunate to have seen it twice. It was one of the last shows I saw prior to the shutdown, and it was the first show I saw when Broadway re-opened.
"There’s nothing quite like the power and the passion of Broadway music. "
Now that show is ending, and as someone who is far away and never got to see it, can someone explain the set / set design and how it functions? I have read it is very complex and impressive?
The photo of Patti rehearsing in front of Sondheim feels pretty special and iconic.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Would love any and all details!"
Bunny Christie designed this incredible set! The main structures are the “scene cubes”. They are moving sets that resemble the different locations. The color is a light gray but the costumes are colorful as well as the lighting so that the set can pick it up. The orchestra is above the set and is revealed during the opening number as a surprise for the audience.
The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince
The reaction from the audience is on fire today. Apparently the older lady next to me was having problems with ppl being so excited. But she had no issue when she made loud noises from getting her candies. So laughable, why go to the closing perf if you cannot stand the clapping and cheering?!

How long of a Standing Ovation did Matt Doyle get for Not Getting Married Today?

I'm guessing you've seen the filmed footage they released earlier of the opening number? With all the cast inside a square.
The set is mainly lit up boxes like that to define rooms or apartments. Sometimes a small square & sometimes a larger rectangle.
When a scene is a character's apartment, it is fully furnished. Harry & Sarah's living room looks very mid century modern with a large all white Jasper Johns' style 35 hung over the sofa.
There is one smaller square that raises & lowers from a trap in the stage. That one seems to be the main piece that gave them troubles. It is used as the apartment balcony in the Susan/Peter vignettes.
The marijuana scene is set on the steps outside a group of Brownstone apartments. All have the street address "35."
The whole "Not Getting Married Today" scene is set inside a sort of aspirational, well appointed yet cluttered, kitchen - all expensive appliances. How did these boys afford it? Are they both stock brokers? Instagram influences? The repeated emphasis that Paul is a Jew seems to suggest it is family money. Of note, at the end of the song the chorus all repeatedly pop out of cupboards etc jack in the box style.
During "Another Hundred People" there are some large letters that spell out COMPANY that get wheeled about into different configurations for the vignettes that break up that song.
During both "Marry Me a Little" & "Being Alive" Bobbie sings alone center stage with the rest of the stage in darkness.
Just as important to the whole set design I think is Bobbie's costume of a red jumpsuit with a lovely frill across the blouse. For most of the show she wears a pair of simple white sneakers - sort of Converse style but without logos.
Wow! Probably a 5 min standing ovation for Patti after LWL. I had to leave during the post-curtain speeches to make my flight but what a wonderful show and amazing closing performance.
"Observe how bravely I conceal this dreadful dreadful shame I feel."
I got a ticket for my second viewing and this is AMAZING!! there was a speech by Elliot and Harper after curtain call, and lots of salary pay jokes. harper, conte, and 2 others signed playbills at stagedoor as well, and lupone had cheers to her car. all in all a great show and I'll really miss it. I'm hoping to see Lenk back on stage again, I saw her in the band's visit and now this and she's been brilliant in both!!

According, to, umm, something on my phone, her ovation was 3 minutes on the nose.
What a glorious afternoon and a beautiful send off to this show.
Another not, my partner, myself and our two friends wore “Chris Harper Pays My Salary” shirts and from across the street, Chris Harper came out of nowhere, screamed “I’m Chris Harper!” and ran across the street to chat with us. Truly a fun NY moment and a very nice guy.
I swear if one more person says “we NEED A CAST RECORDING” I’ll launch myself off the roof of the Jacob’s theater. People have gotten very greedy, haven’t they?
-we need a cast recording! (When one already exists and even though I AM WELL AWARE ITS NOT THE SAME CAST, we still have one)
-we need a proshot!
-we need a movie (pick one or the other. Ya don’t need both a proshot AND a movie).
Like, nothing will ever be good enough for anyone. I understand wanting to immortalize the work, which is probably why the show was filmed last week? But otherwise…like people need to chill. This was not directed at anyone in this thread whatsoever. Just my thoughts.

Was mainly talking about the fact that nobody was even talking about a cast recording, a proshot or a movie (I don’t even REMEMBER that being a discussion), yet you felt the need to write an essay about it. Have fun.

Erm…”expound horse pop this”….huh?? Nah. How miserable people can’t be thankful and grateful and demand a proshot or cast recording. It’ll happen if it happens. If not I am SURE there are bootlegs
People can be grateful AND also want a cast recording or a proshot; they're not mutually exclusive. Regardless, the point is that people are posting abut the final performance, and you felt the need to get on your high horse in response to no one. Read the room.
