Donald Trump Takes Over the Kennedy Center

Parade should probably start making contingencies to play elsewhere.

there's no way Parade ends up playing at the Kennedy Center.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Kennedy Center has the following musicals lined-up:

  • Les Miserables (June 11 - July 13)
  • Legally Blonde (June 11 - 22)
  • Sesame Street (July 10 - Aug. 31)
  • Dungeons & Dragons: The Twenty-Sided Tavern (July 22 - Aug. 3)
  • Parade (Aug. 19 - Sept. 7)
  • The Sound of Music (Sept. 9 - 28)

Let's see how many of these shows actually go up and does the KC even announce their 2025-26 line-up?

I'm sure the dolts running the Sound of Music and Parade runs are like, "Well, we're actually making a subversive statement doing this at Kennedy Center because etc, etc."

They can keep Sound of Music and just tweak so Nazis are the heroes.

Was Jeffrey Finn let go? I don't recall any news of that happening, but I can't seem to find his name on the websites leadership page.

While I feel sorry for art lovers in or near DC (including myself): **** the Kennedy Center.  Let it go down like a Trump casino.  I will not support this venue again until he is gone.  I'm sorry if that means the loss of employment for staff at the KC, but under this administration, they'd be fired regardless.

As Kad so presciently points out, many not-for-profits had to survive with only public support from 2016-2020 (and probably well into the Biden-term).  The call is clear: support local theater.  I am not a DC resident but will be donating to Arena Stages for the fist time.  F*CK these weird creeps.

Every last one of these shows should cancel.

Canceling is easier said than done. These contracts are drawn up a year+ in advance and it's tough to cancel anything on-subscription.

I certainly expect Cameron to continue on with LES MIS's engagement.

I feel awful for all the actors and crews who have to deal with the new regime, and all the employees who are trying to stick it out (at least till they can get a job somewhere else).

From a schadenfreude standpoint, I hope the Trump admin and these philistines brought in to run it realize how tough it is to run a fiscally-sound arts institution!

It's good news for Nederlander who controls the National, which has always been something of a second-banana to the KenCen.

Kennedy Center confirms Conan O'Brien event to continue on schedule

O’Brien said in 2023 that Trump was “bad for comedy.”

“You can’t parody something that already has that crazy, irregular shape. It’s not possible,” the former “Tonight Show” host told Kara Swisher.

“So I always thought that when Trump came along, what a lot of people had to revert to is, ‘Doesn’t he suck? I hate that guy. He’s an a‑‑hole.’ And those aren’t jokes,” O’Brien said.

“That’s his greatest crime, that he’s hurt political comedy by being so outlandish himself,” O’Brien, 61, said.

The president doesn’t, traditionally, attend the mark twain prize ceremony. I’m sure that has something to do with it being kept.

No, because the gay foreigner is the butt of the joke. He probably didn't even come into the country legally.

I know it's easy to say this because it's not my livelihood that's on the line, but I'm going to lose a little bit of respect for anyone who's involved in a performance at the Kennedy Center while this nonsense is going on.

Yeah, I have a lot of fondness for the musical, but it is VERY much a product of our time in the whole "we're obviously well meaning liberals, so we can make some questionable gay/ethnic jokes in good humor" thing.

I did an outdoor production in 2020 that changed Sundeep Padamadan's name to something Russian, to play him as an oligarch instead of an "Indian warlord's son." Given the state of politics at the time, it made more sense to poke fun at the Russians than the Indians for being classless brutes. Was it MTI legal? Probably not, but at least it wasn't racist.

I would imagine that Parade will go forward because the new regime likes its happy ending.
