Even if it is perceived this way or even worse reported this way in the press if they review again, Katrina Lenk joining Into the Woods shouldn’t be considered a ‘redemption’. We were lucky to have her in Company and we’d be lucky to have her in Into the Woods. Sheesh. If people or so called ‘critics’ just want to hear mindless belting Wicked is still open.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Anyone else get a knot in their stomach on the "critically slammed" comment? Beanie flashed before my eyes and I shuddered at the thought of her as the Baker's Wife.
It said recently closed show, so my money would be on Katrina. I'm SURE Sondheim's favorites are top of mind for Jordan, and it's widely known that Sondheim is who handpicked Katrina for Company after that JRB concert and other more A-list names had turned down the role.
Anyone ever sat in the rear mezz of the St. James? Trying to buy tickets but am deciding between splurging for an orchestra seat or settling for rear mezz.
Surprised everyone is so comfortable with calling this cast ' original cast'. While technically true it's misleading. It's not accurate for this production and people could obviously also mistake it for...the actual original broadway cast.

Beanie would be such a good Little Red though. I'm not joking

Understand it’s not popular for everyone but the dream for me would be they are talking to Patti to have her close the show for the last 4 weeks or so to give a boost to the box office assuming things slow a little after Sara etc leave (I know we are hoping it’s the next Chicago but still). Patti’s ‘Last Midnight’ would be pretty special. Sondheim is her greatest musical artist influence and after so many years of playing second fiddle to Bernadette in the 80s and 90s it could be yet another successful outing for her to stick it to Bernadette in her very successful career revival/peak she has had in the last 20 years. So I could see it happening. This is just too good for diva gay fan service gossip to not think about! (I know some may believe the competition between them is exaggerated but I have heard directly from ‘insiders’ that Patti certainly is/was not indifferent to Bernadette’s success). Of course, Bernadette will hopefully be just fine having the last laugh in ‘Square One’.

Um... What? Lol. Kinda nonsense to pit these artists against each other outside of an competitive awards setting. Patti was not a second fiddle to anyone, neither was Peters.

Patti LuPone tried to replace Bernadette in Sunday but wasn’t cast as Sondheim famously said he didn’t want belting, was in the running for the Witch but wanted to play Cinderella and later negotiations ‘broke down’ but then “then Bernadette [Peters] got billing and everything else I wanted”. Meanwhile her career is hurting because of Sunset and Bernadette performs Whistle at C Hall, debuts her Sondheim concert, and wins her second Tony. Patti said she was ‘convinced Sondheim hated me’. Sam Mendes has lined up Patti to star in Gypsy but Laurents stops her from doing the role and gives it to Bernadette (before doing a complete 180 and directing her himself just a few years later). It doesn’t actually stop there, with Patti calling Trevor Nunn about Night Music who ‘didn’t call her back’ and then Bernadette eventually doing the role after Sondheim recommended her personally.
While it’s easy to dismiss their rivalry as gay fan gossip and maybe it is, I have heard from people that have worked with Patti it hasn’t gone unnoticed. However, my speculation that she is enjoying her career revival in this context has no basis what so ever but it’s hard to think someone with Patti’s strong personality wouldn’t. It’s only in the last 15-20 years, essentially since Sweeney Todd that Patti really established herself as a Sondheim girl - who according to her became her biggest musical artist career influence (David Mamet biggest play influence) - holding her own against Bernadette’s position. Between Sweeney, Gypsy, War Paint and Company in my opinion Patti has become the most important Broadway diva in the last 15 years - taking the crown off Bernadette. I think their careers peaked at different times.

If this confuses someone they could simply try being less dumb.
I really don’t want to kill everyone’s excitement but I would bet a million dollars (if I didn’t have $3 in my bank account) that Patti will never being doing a full musica again. You might see her so A song at A concert but it won’t be more than singular songs at big events. You might see a cabaret show or concert. But Patti has said goodbye to the Broadway musical stage.

Never say never! I feel like we all said this after the hip replacement and War Paint. I think that the right project/director would get her back on Broadway.
"Ok ok ok ok ok ok ok. Have you guys heard about fidget spinners!?" ~Patti LuPone
Treading carefully but the circumstances are a bit different since War Paint. It’s really not LuPone. If it was, id be milking this scope for tik tok views.
