Hated this in London. Absolutely hated it. But I know others love it so I’m super curious to see how it does here.

Question: If I'm not a typical fan of British humor / Monty Python humor / Mel Brooks humor, am I pretty much fated to not enjoy this? For reference - I loathed The Play That Goes Wrong, Peter and the Starcatcher, Spamalot, etc. I'm trying to keep an open mind with this one. For the $39 flash sale price, I figured it was worth checking out regardless, but I'd love to hear from folks who have seen this.

For what it's worth I didn't enjoy Spamalot or the Producers but I loved Mincemeat. It's got an actual plot and far more emotional depth than the above shows (I never saw Starcatcher). It's funny but not in the slapstick/physical comedy way, it's more about the writing and delivery.

Exactly this. It’s an entry into the “stranger than fiction” genre of story (like DEAD OUTLAW) in that you couldn’t really make these actual events up - just find the opportunities to theatricalize. Because it’s based on truth, and also has a well of emotional depth - especially with regards to both Hester and “The Man Who Never Was”, you have as close to a perfect modern musical as you can get here.

Thank you both, amiyagi and quizking101, for the thoughtful replies! I'm more excited to see this now than I initially was!

You aren’t ready. I thought I was and when the tonal change happens midsong (as it reflects her experiences), it’s heartbreaking.

The first time I saw him do it, I just started bawling at that point.

I went to Theatermania to buy tickets, and it tried to sell me tickets to the London production!

I cannot wait for this one.....out of all the musicals this season, I'm most excited by this!
I have it sandwiched between Streetcar and Othello - so a much needed break!

If I wanted to exchange my seats from last week’s flash sale to a post-opening date, how reliable is Telecharge customer service? It’s possible I can’t make it for my original date anymore.

The flash sale was for previews only so it seems unlikely they’d let you exchange.

Having exchanged Telecharge tickets twice, my guess is that they will allow you to make the exchange. BUT, you'll have to pay the current price for the ticket you are buying. (In the end, they'll give you your money back for the original purchase & then process your new purchase.)

For those who have seen the show and also seen other shows at The Golden theater: where would you recommend to get seats? I am thinking of splurging on this one and looking at seats in center orchestra row L.

The show’s website lists an approximate 2:35 runtime, including a 20-minute intermission.

How British lol. But I’ve been to other shows with longer intermissions lately.
Very excited to see this tonight.
I do think it’ll be mostly fans tonight so it might not be the perfect comp to how this show will go down here. But it should be a great show to be at.

Orchestra or front mezz. The back mezzanine feels far away.

How high is the stage. Could one see well from the front row?

I'm so curious to hear what people think of this. Based on what I've heard about the London production, the humor either works for you or it doesn't. Due to my travel schedule, I'm in a position to see this either in New York or in London with the replacement cast ... or both ... or neither if I decide it's probably not my cup of tea.
The one thing people seem to agree on is that the original cast, most of whom have transferred, is fabulous.
