This sounds great. Any know of any current promo codes? I've only seen the one for previews that has expired now.

Or, maybe it's not everyones cup of tea, which is fine, and doesn't mean they have it "out for" a production? I'm sure there are shows you dislike- do you have it out for them? Can't we have a difference of opinion and say we dislike a show without people thinking we want bad things for it? It's not odd. It's normal.
I can absolutely understand how this show will not appeal to a lot of people. It’s a very specific kind of humor and if it ain’t your thing, it ain’t your thing. Hell, there’s some jokes in here that absolutely make me roll my eyes and i wish they were cut, but i still like the show very much.
If I had to pick between this and “MHE” (for awards), I’d still personally choose “MHE”. But I do think this one will absolutely be a front runner for several awards this year.

Wow some people have a real stick up their butt about this show, like they were expecting to see Les Miz or something
Id certainly rather put a stick up my butt than watch this musical again.

cool
Are we really doing that thing again in which negative reactions to a show are treated like some kind of conspiracy against the production? Nothing is universally beloved. This is a subjective artform.

Can someone clarify as to what the specific type of humor is? (ie, Gentleman's Guide, 39 Steps, Book of Mormon, Monty Pythonesque British Humor?)
I know the US IS going through a whole thing right now where it's cool to ignore diversity & equity etc...but this comment is just totally offensive to those of us who enjoy putting sticks up our butts.

I’d say like 39 Steps with songs. Or like Gentleman’s Guide, but only the Jefferson Mays parts. Also similar to presentation concepts in Gutenberg. I don’t see any similarities with Book of Mormon or Monty Python.

Go listen to the London cast recording.

Not overly impressed by the sophistication of American audiences. Might explain the weird “I’d rather ram a stick up my butt”-level of responses. So much unnecessary anger, cruelty and snark, which is also becoming increasingly common in this country. Stick with Wicked or Back to the Future. Might be all you folks can handle.

This is a WILD comment. I said it a few days ago in another thread, but I’m quickly remembering why I took a break from this message board.

I had the same reaction to QueenAlice's gross comment, but to be fair, this language is direct response the way BoringBoredBoard phrased it, which was obviously a turn of phrase. Lets all try and relax
(though it is disheartening to see the same toxicity foment about another show-- its fans shrieking at whoever doesnt like it, and its detractors going over the top with disturbing rage about a play they didnt like---calm down all)

Back to the Future… which came from the UK and closed at a loss here?

If only this could also be the case on the Maybe Happy Ending thread.

I went in wanting to like this based on some of the comments here. I used to live in the UK so I think I have some appreciation of British sensibility but this was a disappointment.
Others have pointed out the broad humor and the mugging for the audience. It's all that with some jazz squares. The cast seems to be having a ball, cracking themselves up. And there were some in Monday night's audience who laughed uproariously at each pulled face.
With all of that I did like Jak Malone's performance. Natasha Hodgson's performance, not so much.
I wish them well. At least so far it seems that there may be enough fans to support a long run.

Wow, this board certainly took 180 on this musical. When it was announced, I swear it was one of the most praised and hyped up shows discussed on here. Even infamous Lempicka didn't get such trashing immediately after its 2 first previews. What happened?

A couple people saw it and didn't like it and wrote that they didn't like it. You will see more hype as more people see it and comment.
As someone who saw early previews of both Lempicka and Operation Mincemeat, let me tell you, there is no comparison - in both quality of product and of forum responses. Granted, I made it through both acts of Lempicka, but it really was a train wreck that had to be witnessed. Mincemeat was just annoying and kind of boring, so I thought it was a better use of my time not to be there.
But make no mistake, Lempicka is a far worse musical than Mincemeat. While a bit too smugly clever for its own good, in my opinion, the lyrics and storytelling of Mincemeat are nonetheless clever. It doesn’t inspire a vitriol because it’s not terribly offensive; it just requires an appreciation of a specific type of humor.
Anyhoo, let’s not make this anything it’s not. The size of the Golden alone compared to the Fortune means more eyes will be on this, per performance, so we’re naturally going to see more variation in responses. Add to that the cultural divide in comedic and historical sensibilities, and the natural backlash that comes from a whole new group of people seeing a wildly critically acclaimed show for the first time, and you have what we’re seeing here in this preview thread. (Not to mention the fact that there are people who saw this pre-Broadway and also didn’t like it, but whatev.)
We have our first extension, through July 13! (May it be the first of many.)
Tix on sale February 28.

This is going to stay open for awhile if it wins the Best Musical Tony. They might just replace the cast after 6 months.
