Neither of these women seem to have addressed this issue through the proper channels, but one of them did so privately and with a little more tact than a social media post publicly shaming the other and demanding an apology. The issue here is volume and most shows today are too loud.

That’s not what Kecia wants. Kecia wants attention. You don’t get that by having an actual, legitimate, civilized and private conversation (as you so rightly suggest).

I can’t help but wonder what Kecia was more annoyed about- the request to lower the volume on two sound cues, or the remark Patti made re: signing that Playbill.

I wonder if Audra really knew what this was all about before offering her support? I was surprised she would comment on it. Unless she and the other actress are perhaps good friends or former colleagues and because of that she felt it concerned her as well?
The Roommate opened September 12th. Wouldn’t Patti or someone in the Roommate production have addressed this during previews? I watched the Roommate during previews on a Saturday evening and and not once did I hear any noise from Hells Kitchen. If anything, I would hear the occasional car beep noises or tricycle music from 45th street. There was also someone using assistive listening device who didn’t turn off or remove their hearing aids and all of us could hear the feedback for at least 20 mins (thereafter it just blended in the background like crickets.)
If you read through the Roommate previews thread, no one commented that they could hear music from Hells Kitchen when they watched The Roommate.
I watched Hills of California (Broadhurst theater also adjacent to Shubert theatre) and that’s a quiet play…. But I didnt hear music from Hells Kitchen.

I mean, I would think she watched the video. I know Patti and Audra have a working relationship and I was a bit surprised to see her comment publicly.
All Patti had to do would be go next door and talk to the production team etc, NOT the landlord. She got the landlord on the phone because of who she is. Could any old cast member call a theatre owner and be like 'hey, the show next door is too loud' and the owner jumps in to action. No of course not.
The problem isn't that Patti that refused to sign a playbill from a show she wasn't in, it was what she said 'I'm not signing that that shows too loud'. PATTI made that public first by saying it in public, not Kecia.
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna

I feel like a lot of Kecia’s friends/those in her circle are just supporting this as a knee-jerk reaction because they want to seem supportive of her. I do find it ironic how many of her friends are calling the post a “call in” rather than a “call out” when the only people it seems to be calling in are those already in her orbit. I don’t think the post is going to accomplish “building community” in the way she claims to want—it really just seems like she’s asking for support and validation from her friends.

Regarding timing, someone said that HK has gotten louder recently/ changed sound cues. Don't know if that's true but it would explain why this is happening now.
Is there room in this discussion for the possibility that Patti has a lasting friend/relationship with said landlord? The action that *seems* to have bothered Lewis is how “entitled” LuPone felt to go to the landlord (as opposed to stage management/sound/etc at HK)…but it’s not like a classmate telling on you to the teacher. Patti knows everyone at that tier. It probably made more sense for her to go that route as opposed to cold reaching out to someone she doesn’t know, which would definitely come off MORE entitled/overstepping.
Lewis taking offense to LuPone sending flowers is…something.
Patti LuPone is by no means the first person (onstage or off) to make private complaints or requests regarding neighboring productions - and it’s not like the landlord is invoking a stop clause due to a noise complaint or two sound cues. This entire thing is so overblown for nothing.
This is ridiculous in so many respects. And troubling that this public “call out” is being celebrated by many. This is reactivity that can be handled and soothed intimately and privately without advertisement and shaming, though in so many cases like these, “shaming” is reframed as “mature conversation” and “calling for accountability.” I certainly won’t say that KL’s feelings are “wrong” - they are what they are, she feels how she feels. But it’s getting more and more tiring having to sit back and watch folks applaud these immature, social media approaches to conflict that just pour fuel on fire and stoke anger in people who don’t need to be involved. Enough. Hoping that these approaches to conflict go completely out of style soon. It’s been feeling stale and off-putting for quite a while now. Irked by this approach and equally off-put by the sheep-like applauding of it. Really hoping we can all start to wake up and recognize we can both hold ourselves and others accountable *AND ALSO* cool it with this performative faux-mature callout stuff. People see this for what it is.

Alsoit disincentivizes actual accountability and apologies. I can’t speak for Kecia, of course, but often groups/individuals demanding apologies in this manner are not actually interested in the apology. It will either be deemed as “not good enough”. Or they might say “Thanks for apologizing, but you should have known better than to transgress in the first place.”
So, from a cynical perspective, why apologize at all? Patti’s audience is much larger than Kecia’s, news sources would pick it up, etc. Much better to do nothing and let the internet’s short memory do the work. Even if Kecia just wants a private apology/conversation…she’s already shown she’s willing to go straight to her followers with the situation. What’s to say a private apology wouldn’t also be shared and discussed on her platform?

I think this would have been worse had she just walked next door. And do we know that she actually made the call? Is it possible that management did on her behalf and that was relayed to the HK production team and cast? This would, for me, explain how Ms. Lewis knows that the complaint came from Patti. Might have been smart of them to have just addressed the issue letting the production know that there were some sound volume/bleeding issues, correct them and move on. (I worked on 2 shows where this was a problem and they were corrected with no problems.)
As far as the flowers go...was the pic shared with the cast or taken by a cast member? Is it possible that the head of the Sound team and management are not African American and she took offence that the cast, who is predominantly African American, was not included on the thank you card? This could possibly just have been an oversight on Patti's part. Sound needed to fix the problem, she thanked them, but it seemed to impact the cast. The complaint wasn't directed towards to the cast, it was directed at the sound team who evidently fixed the problem. To pull race into this is ridiculous. And if she feels this is a racial thing, she should have taken her own advice and addressed Patti...directly and not dragged her on social media. Just my random thoughts.
As I said in The Roommate thread, I find it implausible that LuPone could just dial up the Shuberts to have them force a production to change sound cues. I have a feeling the narrative just became "Patti complained."
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
I love how many people are acting like Kecia is so out of line for coming for Patti on social media, like Patti is some demure wallflower who “handled things the right way.”
Patti LuPone is a bull in a china shop who takes any opportunity she is in a public forum to bash someone, shame someone or just be plain nasty. She is a bully still trashing Madonna and ALW after 30 years. Get over it lady. Maybe people in the community are sick of her antics.
Patti may not be on social media but she is toxic in just about any appearance she makes. Shes not some drag queen throwing shade. She’s not that talented. She just comes across as miserable and petty.
I continue to appreciate Patti’s talent but I never watch any of her appearances because of her nasty demeanor.
And policing how a black woman “should” express herself is microaggressive.
"The sexual energy between the mother and son really concerns me!"-random woman behind me at Next to Normal

She is supremely talented as an actress and vocalist. I wasn’t referring to her creative work. I was saying she’s not a professional insult comic or drag queen adept at throwing shade. She just sounds miserable and petty. And it’s tiring to listen to her complain about everyone and everything. I

Well, I was one of the people who commented about Kecia using social media.
Yes, it is used constantly for going after people and is pretty much the norm. But in my comment I suggested that Kecia take her own advice, that she repeated a few times in her video, and address Patti directly. Invite her to talk Directly. As she mentioned, I think, they are right next door so what stopped her from going over and talking to Patti in person?
