Per the BWW Article, "Francis announced the news on his Instagram story citing laryngitis leading to a vocal cord industry(sic) as cause for his absence."
Ya gotta look out for "vocal chord industry" -- and proof-reading! It appears twice in the article. Good ole BWW at its finest.
Tom Francis has two understudies: Jimin Moon and Diego Andres Rodriguez. But it seems as if Rodriguez has gone on more often than Moon. Rodriguez normally plays Artie, so who understudies Artie when Rodriguez goes on for Francis? Has anyone seen Moon and Rodriguez? How do they compare & contrast, especially next to Francis?
I saw the show last Wednesday (my third time) and saw Diego Rodriguez as Joe Gillis. First let me say, I enjoy his energy as Artie very much and feel he is well cast. His work as Gillis is solid. He was obviously well rehearsed, even this early in the run. He played off of Scherzinger very well and had great chemistry with Betty (also an understudy).
Diego actually struck me as a young Tom Cruise type. There was a boyish innocence displayed. Not equipped to handle the situation he found himself in. While on the other hand, you saw the recognition that he was seizing the opportunities given.
Again, in time his characterization will grow. Tom Frances is fabulous and I look forward to seeing him again.
won lotto for tomorrow. kinda bummed no Tom, but oh well.
i can finally say I saw a Joe understudy in “sunset” on Broadway. I saw multiple Norma, Betty, Max and Artie understudies in the original and a Betty understudy in the revival … never a Gillis u/s
I have a spare ticket for tonight - Thursday 14th Nov. It's front Mezz. I'm giving it away for free. If anyone hasn't seen it, or maybe can't afford Broadway prices, here's your chance. Send me a msg and I'll get back to you. Cheers.
Saw this tonight, at the tail end of a 3 show day, after seeing Oh Mary. Of the two this was the most camp. It's like a cheesey Hammer Horror film.
There were no mid-show standing ovations... I guess they quit paying the claqueurs?
Diego Andres Rodriguez was on as Joe Gillis. For anyone bothered by the regular Joe looking too close in age to Ms S. I recommend they see it with young Master Rodriguez as he looks all of 14, or maybe 15 years old. He can sing very well. All the cast can sing very well. I wish I could tell if any of them can act. Much too gimmicky direction. When half the audience is laughing at the SPOILERS

and has no f-ing clue what just happened, welp you just haven't told your story very well - and that's on the director.
There has got to be a better performance by a leading lady in something coming this season. This is just pure camp. There's more depth in a bowl of ramen than in what Ms. Scherzinger is doing on stage.
One more thought about leading lady awards competition... I had plenty of problems with Redwood when I saw it in LaJolla, but Menzel's performance knocks this out of the water.
Per Instagram, Caroline Bowman was rehearsing during the day for Sunset Boulevard. Maybe she will go on soon before leaving for smash rehearsals in January/February?

It was a standard weekly understudy rehearsal. She had a put-in a couple of weeks ago.
Her best chance at going on would be Gonzalez giving her a performance right before she exits for Smash.

I also have a ticket to give away. Tomorrow night (11/16), and it's a pretty good one--Row D in the orchestra, seat 2 (on the aisle). I hesitated to post this because I am technologically challenged, but it appears that I can send the ticket to someone on the Seat Geek app. Maybe an email address would be the best way. Hopefully I will succeed. PM me if interested.
Despite Adam Feldman's prognostications, my conversations with folks in the industry indicate to me that no one gave a damn about the "controversy" and she's still the clear favorite for the statue. I'm looking forward to seeing Audra's performance as well, but we can pretty much foresee what she's going to do with Rose. It's not going to be the surprise that Nicole has been to a lot of people. We're overdue for a tie, so maybe there's hope.

Yeah, I really don't think any of that matters at all -- especially at this early point in the season.
It's also not like the Tony voters are entirely liberal. I'd guess at least half of them range from Trumpy to "middle aged & older moderate liberal." And if there's one thing these voters DO hate, it's being told how to think.
I suspect that 99+% of the people who might buy tickets to see SB based on reviews, WOM, etc., could care less as to whether she may have voted for Trump. Business, awards recognition, and all the other good things associated with a hit will still happen, while some of the people on this board continue to predict doom and destruction.
There are understudies for Joe, Max and Betty on tonight. I will be in the city early and I am going to the box office to see if I can get my tickets changed for another week. These were expensive and I would rather see it with the normal cast. Since they are not above the title names.. will they allow the exchange? My train is arriving in the city in one hour.

I don't know but I saw a short clip of Diego Andres Rodriguez singing the title song and he sounds fantastic.
They changed them. They were not very friendly and tried to stick me with extreme side orchestra seats for my new date. I had to show them on my iphone the seats I wanted and that they WERE available at my price. Sickening how rude they were. Got my tkts tickets for Hills of California now.. getting a bite.
