Back through February 26 on Telecharge, and Tyler Perry has also "bought out a performance."

Which is unfortunate. I agree that we need for shows focused on non-white stories, we need more non-white creators, we need to reach out and market properly to non-white audiences - that still doesn’t make this a good show. I wish Tyler Perry would spend his money on things that actually matter or have any actual impact. This show is neither.

That's your opinion. I, and a lot of other people, think this is a brilliant show.

Good thing it's none of your business what other people do with their own money. And unless you saw the show, you can't really comment on it or if it mattered. How would you know?
Too bad Tyler Perry won't be in the show. That would get butts in seats.

Honestly, it wouldn't be the first time this has happened. Sometimes there are too many people involved to get a big project past a finish line in time - announcements, on-sales, etc. are often scheduled before the artwork for these shows is complete (and sometimes before it's even begun), and reckoning has to occur and everyone settles because no one could agree and the sands have run out in the hourglass.

So....regarding these celebrities that are "buying out performances," what does this actually mean?
Are they literally buying the remaining tickets to a set show? Or are they just figuratively buying the performance by donating a set amount to the show, a set amount that WOULD buy every seat in the theatre? If they're literally buying up tickets, who gets these tickets and who sees the show?
My old brain is confused.

I also don't understand this

They are buying out the performance so the tickets can be donated to people who otherwise would not have the opportunity to see the show, maybe Will & Jada's friends, etc. And maybe they "host" something at the show, too, I don't know.
The dollar amount and logistics are an accounting matter that we aren't privy to. I would assume they are buying out the house not at full-price...maybe $50K ($50 per seat).

Ah, that was my other question....an estimation of what this actually costs. Thanks.

This is what I thought too, but with only a few days left, no one has said how anyone can claim tickets for these "bought out" performances, and you can still purchase tickets to every remaining performance, so...?

My question- and I think it is an important one- is this show racist and anti-white? I think that might be the perception of many people- especially white middle class people- who do not go to the theater to be excoriated- severely criticized.

No.

Good to know- and I do believe you. I do think that sometimes these shows with controversial themes do come across as possibly racist- and many people do not want to go to the theater to be insulted. Going to the theater for thought provoking experience is definitely what I love.

Okay so what the hell is happening? Tickets are back on sale for the full run? What is the point of doing that without announcing it?
According to Cooper’s Instagram story, Shonda Rhines just bought out a whole performance
I wish someone could explain what the endgame is with these couple performances being bought out by millionaires. How does that translate to the public buying tickets?

Where do these tickets go? Are they just guaranteeing a performance so whatever doesn’t get sold are paid by them?

It doesn't. Just means the cast gets to play to an almost empty theater - whoopee. That's always fun. Mostly virtue signaling. Better to put the money up front in producing which includes better promotion.

Why wouldn't tickets be given away for these performances that celebrities buy out? It would make no sense to play to an empty house.

Which one? There are five left, and none are close to sold out. Also, Telecharge STILL HAS TICKETS ON SALE PAST SUNDAY!!
Omg let this show go already! No one wants to see it

No reason they wouldn't give them away - that still presents the issue of getting the word out. Were there any announcements about free tickets and how to get them? Same with the special appearance by RuPaul - people who would be interested in seeing the show have to know what's going on. My take from this entire thread is they had a new play that was well-written and acted and targeted a specific audience, but also hoped for broader exposure. Thing was that word wasn't spread to any great extent that was compelling. Marketing is an art of its own and money has to be spent on getting the best you can.
Shame.

False. These tickets will be given out and distributed to people who otherwise could never afford to see a Broadway show. They will not play to an empty house.

It's a good question. I believe it is about raising the profile of the very serious issue (that many on this board are avoiding like the plague) of diversifying the audience side of the equation. It's not about selling tickets this week; Cooper has no real stake in that. I guess we will see if they extend a bit but this is definitely about the future and, as in the show, he is aiming squarely at both the prevailing race of Broadway and his own race. I have my money on him eventually moving the needle some.
