reNt is still one of the worst shows ever, if Larson hadn’t died it would never made it to Broadway or anywhere else.
Cyrano the musical back in the 90’s was well s h i t
Act one of Wicked , awful awful awful . While act two is slightly better

I saw Cyrano in Holland in '92.
Perhaps it was a tad more lyrical in the original Dutch?

Does the New York Summer Spectacular with the Rockettes count?
That was the most dreadful piece of **** I’ve ever seen in a theater.
The recent national tour of Les Misérables...thought it would never, ever, eevvveeeer end. Ugh.

I guess I'm in the minority and think Mary Poppins is a gorgeous show. Though I saw a middle school production of it that was... something.

I have to agree with the woman in front of Huss417. Even with the nudity, Passion was a bore.

Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. As a lifelong Summer fan, I couldn’t believe what a horrible mess this was. I would’ve left at intermission but there was none - we were trapped! I guess the producers figured the audience would leave at intermission, so they didn’t give us one. LOL!
Summer must be rolling in her grave - still!
Dance of the Vampires. The critics were brutal in their reviews. After I saw the show, I thought the critics were kind. I'm sure Michael Crawford still regrets his return to Broadway; I sure do!

I'll limit my response to on Broadway... Absolutely BROOKLYN.
As a matinee with a LOT of understudies. But there's no cast that could've made that good.
(It's also the show that made me realize, sometimes there's no intermission for a reason)

I still consider RENT to be the worst thing I have ever seen on a professional stage. I felt trapped. I had images of myself stepping on people's heads in an effort to get out. But I stuck it out and watched the whole miserable thing. Simply awful.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I saw the tour and I normally can find something positive about any live show, but there was not a single redeeming factor for this show.
For me, it used to be first, last and always Big River. But, then came The Bodyguard....Even great songs couldn't save that show. I think it is the "worst." Dishonorable mentions: The Commitments and We Will Rock You (both in London) I don't remember much of seeing Odyssey (Yul Bryner and Joan Diener which eventually became the one night wonder Home Sweet Homer) and The Baker's Wife (the Topol version) at Los Angeles Civic Light Opera in the mid-70s I don't recall liking either one - but I was younger.
But, my worst experience was probably The Threepenny Opera with Sting, which we saw in D.C. It didn't help that a few days earlier, we'd seen Tyne Daly in Gypsy. Both were in their warm-ups for Broadway.
If we are counting revues... "Street Corner Symphony" which was a god-awful "Smokey Joe's Cafe" wannabe. Just abysmal! (Although I wasn't really a fan of "Smokey Joe's" either.)
Book musicals... I agree that "The Bodyguard" was pretty bad. And as beautiful as it was to look at on Broadway, the book of "Wonderland" was cringe worthy at least!

I'm torn between Spiderman and Moulin Rouge. Spiderman was really bad... but at least had the special effects and an original score. Moulin Rouge.... I loved the cast but I just couldn't stand all the modern pop songs randomly shoe-horned into the show.
But that's me... I LOVED Mary Poppins and saw it many times on Broadway and on tour. I'm wondering which cast people saw that rank it up with the worst... I can't imagine anyone NOT enjoying a performance by Gavin Lee.

The Last Ship.
Only time I've ever left at intermission.
I came here with one show in mind but seeing SUMMER and MOULIN ROGUE, yes, I’d add those. SUMMER was a free ticket from a friend so that was ok; had I paid I’d have been irate. For MR I bought into the hype but what a let down. I would have happily watched Kyle Brown in a corset hanging on the cage for 2.5 hours as well as the two twin-like guys walking arm in arm in the pre-show.
My least favorite is FLOYD COLLINS. And it still shocks me to say that because all the elements were there. Everything I’ve seen at TheaterWorks Silicon Valley has been outstanding (they received last year’s regional Tony, well deserved albeit long overdue), and I love bluegrass. The cave set was somewhat interesting to look at, a sort of jungle gym on steroids, and good movement from the actors crawling inside it. But wow this show bored me to tears. I believe this is the only show I’ve ever left at intermission.
I had no care about Floyd and his plight. Reminds me of that line from the Golden Girls when they talked about the bad actress playing Anne Frank and the audience of the play yelling “She’s in the attic! She’s in the attic!” LOL
JBroadway said: ""Wonder.land" at the National Theatre in London - perhaps the worst piece of theatre I've ever seen, musical or otherwise."
I was struggling to make my mind up, but then you reminded me. It was indescribably awful- out there ahead of the pack. (and I lived through the great London flop era of the late 80s and early 90s!)
When I go to hell, I'll be forced to sit through BKLYN through all of eternity.

Falsettos, We Will Rock You and Cats for me. Horrendous.
Prince of Egypt was dire as well and I absolutely loathed Matilda, though the sound was more the problem than the show itself as I had no idea what was going on because I couldn’t hear/understand any of the lyrics.
War Paint was pretty terrible too, but it’s main crime is it’s just meh.
I liked the story of Wicked but everything else about it was tedious.
I’ve never understood Phantoms appeal either. I’ve seen it twice now and still couldn’t tell you how it ends. It plods along endlessly before it finally builds to some sort of a climax and then they stand there screaming over the top of each other for 10 minutes and it ends.
I also found the Lion King overlong and very boring.
Heaps of shows have great first acts and terrible second acts too. Caroline or Change, Groundhog Day and Bandstand I’m looking at you.
