That was Eric Lajuan Summers. He was a longtime Angel and u/s Lola in Kinky Boots who passed away from cancer the day after it closed
Seems like I may be in the minority but I thought it was a fun night. I haven't seen a ton of performances from the nominees before tonight and haven't seen any of the shows (I am seeing a bunch this summer) but I thought a lot of shows sold themselves well. My thoughts on the performances:
Ain't Too Proud - Fun and energetic! Exactly what I expected.
Tootsie - I was underwhelmed by this one
Oklahoma - Loved it. Very excited to see it this summer.
Beetlejuice - I thought it was a fun and energetic performance but I just have no interest in this show
The Prom - I thought this looked great. I hope it's still open by the time I get there this summer.
Hadestown - I know very little about Hadestown (on purpose as I don't like to be spoiled before I see it) and was fascinated by that performance.
Kiss Me, Kate - Fun performance
The Cher Show - Biggest mess of the night. Completely underwhelming.
I thought the opening number was fun, but not as catchy or memorable as some other ones in recent years. I liked most of Corden's bits.
They did Be More Chill dirty with that Michael In The Bathroom bit. To think they name-dropped King Kong but wouldn't even recognize a show they sang a song from is messed up.
Les Moonves would never let two repeating verses of Can You Feel The Love Tonight be the In Memoriam song. The hell were they thinking?!
While I'm so happy SJB won in general, I haven't seen The Cher Show yet so based on that performance...I just don't even get how that's a Broadway show.
I'm not sure any show is going to get a Tony boost from the show, except for Ain't Too Proud and from everyone that doesn't know Network closed yesterday.

Well...Kong did receive a Tony for the puppet...and BMC got....got....oh, one... nomination.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I'm a big fan of both SJB and Cher, but I went in not wanting this to be the role Stephanie finally wins a Tony for. I left the theatre saying she deserves a Tony for that performance. She's just that good in it.
I honestly would have been happy with anyone in that category winning. It was a really good one in my opinion. Without seeing the performance, I can see how SJB wouldn't be a satisfying win for this show, but yeah, she's earned it.
Fighting slumber as I write this, so forgive any typos:
-Can not be any happier with the winners: Celia, Andre, Stephanie and Bertie (He deserved it so much for Matilda!) finally get their Tonys. I love Santino (AHHH BABY GIRL!!!) and oh my gosh, Ali! You make us, the disability community, proud! My college self needed you so bad after I was convinced I could never be a theatre or acting major.
That be said, I get why Ali waited in backstage for her Tony, but her not to be up there with her co-stars (I saw Mary and Damion) and the team for Oklahoma’s win is infuriating
-So annoyed with Hadestown's performance. Love the Reese and Andre attention, but I'm so mad Eva didn't sing Wait for Me when she could easily do the reprise.
-Agreed about Cher Show and the BMC bit. George, who deserved a nom, could have easily done Michael in the Bathroom and still get his recognition. A treat to have Sara and Josh sing it though. Cher Show was nothing, but a costume show.
-I couldn't help, but think Daniel should have won Best Direction. Rachel's direction was sublime, but she deserved it for GC. Daniel recreated OK, a classic show, completely.
-So disappointed ATP won Best Cherography. It looks good, but "Darn Hot" is one of the best dance numbers I've seen on Broadway.

Three direction of Oklahoma was great but some traditionalists rejected the notion of it. What probably broke the tie was The Dream Ballet which is probably the most hated thing this season. Every review had a special section where it was like "everything is great... but the dream ballet. "

I think Santino knows the show is in hot water, and people on Twitter are not being very nice. He also fully avoided addressing the issue, which is fine, but not helpful to his situation.
The amount of people calling Tootsie transphobic is kind of jarring. I’ll admit the Tony performance wasn’t great, but that’s not indicative of Santino’s performance as a whole.
Tony’s were advertised as being live in Mountain time on tv schedule starting at 6 pm but 60 minutes came on so it didn’t start until 7. It still said live though with nothing about being recorded.
So, something hit me that hadn't hit me other times I've seen Stroker perform from Oklahoma! while watching. How do they handle this new sexually liberated Ado Annie when she does end up with Will, who doesn't like her ways, and she settles? How can they end that in a way done well that doesn't feel like it's shaming that liberation, whereas before it was something that made her feel insecure.
I'm seeing it in a month and really enjoyed this performance I just don't know how that would resolve.

This was the one category I got wrong. I saw Beetlejuice, and went in expecting popcorn for the brain. Got just that, and the set really did transform through the show. Too bad, but frankly the set for Hadestown with the lighting really did set a mood. So, it just tipped a different way.
I enjoyed the show very much overall. Was really hoping The Waverly Gallery would’ve won best revival, but not mad at The Boys in the Band and I’m ecstatic Elaine May won. Was surprised ATP took best choreography (haven’t seen it) over KMK.
I enjoyed most of the performances. ATP started out sorta shaky vocally I thought but ended up amazing. The Cher Show was the weakest of the night, but those male dancers were nice. I’m more excited to see Hadestown in September now. I also loved Ali’s performance and I really liked Tootsie’s as well. I hope to see it and Oklahoma in September. The part of Beetlejuice’s performance that had been tweaked for TV was fun. The rest was sorta hit-and-miss, but overall fun. Still not excited to see The Prom and after tonight I probably won’t have a chance as it’ll likely close before I’m back in NYC in September.
I thought James Corden did great. Perhaps my greatest surprise of the night was my friend who I was messaging back-and-forth with asked me who he was. She is quite a bit younger than me. Probably in her late 20s or early 30s but apparently doesn’t watch much network TV other than our Bachelorette/Bachelor text-fests on Monday nights.
Perhaps my biggest disappointment of the night was that I started following the New York Times commentary between Brantley and Green and a third person. She seemed clueless and they had nothing to add other than snarky remarks or just stating the obvious so I quit following.

No. He said that to Darren Criss and it was a JOKE.

Well, the idea of a cis-man passing as a woman in order to encroach on women's spaces is literally the basis of the bathroom bill, horrible TERFist beliefs, and trans discrimination, so it's very much reflexive then that even without mentioning trans people Tootsie accidentally aligns with transphobic bull****.
My big hate-on for Tootsie is the idea of a man putting on a dress becoming the best woman in his field by default.
I feel like I'm the only one who actually enjoyed the Tootsie performance. Sure, it wasn't enough to push me to buy a ticket, but I did like it. And there definitely performances that were a lot more lackluster this evening.
Also, seeing Kiss Me, Kate! lose best choreography left a sour taste in my mouth. Especially after "Too Darn Hot" this evening.

I saw KMK, what you saw was the best part. The rest of the show isboring as hell. The voters made the right call."
I’m seeing Aint Too Proud in October so that’s good to hear. Really looking forward to seeing Jeremy Pope.
