I'm am delighted with how thorough and thoughtful these nominations are. Everything seems right to me, including acknowledgment of some I thought would escape notice.
My recollection from looking at data from shows that were somewhat struggling and received a bunch of Tony Nominations (e.g. Fun Home & Gentlemen's Guide) is that this will translate into a mild bump but it will not save the show until/unless it wins Best Musical - one of if not the only Tony Award that will pretty much always guarantee a massive box office bump and some longevity. These nominations might keep Paradise Square and A Strange Loop open for a little bit longer but my prediction is that neither show can survive on these nominations alone.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Categories I got entirely right (or five correct picks with all the ties): Best Musical (minus the extra slot for Paradise Square), Best Play, Best Musical Revival, Best Actress in a Play, Best Actor in a Play (minus the two extra slots for David Threlfall and Adrian Lester), and Best Actor in a Musical.
Categories I got 4 right: Director of a Musical, Choreo, Book of a Musical, Original Score, Features Actress in a Musical, Featured Actress in a Play, Leading Actress in a Musical, Revival of a Play.
I did not do anything that wasn't on Gold Derby and got 3 right for every other category that I did predict.
Very disappointed that none of the Caroline, or Change featured actresses got nominated - each of them gave outstanding performances. Also hilarious that one of the three noms CoC got was “costumes” - that was one of the weakest parts of the show! Also rolling my eyes at A Strange Loop for sound design (saying this as someone who loves ASL) and Mr. Saturday Night for best book, best score, and best musical. Against the heavy hitters in this field, they have no chance. Also pleasantly surprised by the love for Paradise Square! Wouldn’t be complaining about any AJ or Sidney winning featured actor.

I'm just thrilled for Jennifer Simard. I was worried she might not get in with Patti being the Big Name, but she totally stole the show for me and frankly I'm rooting for her to win it
I noticed a big insult directed at SJP & Matthew Broderick.
They can have a hit show, that when you read Tripadvisor is one of the two shows bringing tourists into NYC (the other being Music Man) & no acknowledgment
I don't even like her. but SJP should have been nominated.

? Clarke was nominated.
"
Sorry, I meant for featured actress! Caissie, Tamika, and Samantha were who I was thinking of.

I don’t think the nominators consider what TripAdvisor says, somehow.

This has been brewing for a while, but MJ has a real shot to win Best Musical. Especially if the voters don't personally like A STRANGE LOOP and don't think SIX is a significant piece of writing, MJ is right there. It could be the Tony equivalent of GREEN BOOK. And no amount of Twitter yelling will matter at all.
MR. SATURDAY NIGHT getting a score nomination might be the most baffling nom of the morning. Yes it was a weak year outside of two contenders, but it wasn't their only option.

This is like when people bitch & moan that SPIDER-MAN didn't get a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. Its financial performance is its award. The Tonys are not an award for who is earning the most money; if it was, MUSIC MAN and FUNNY GIRL would have had a lot more nominations.
I am baffled by both COMPANY and POTUS BEST SCENIC Tony Noms.
BOTH shows set's were robust and pretty but also detrimental to the pacing of the shows.
In Company watching the set move in and out slowly was cool to the eye but did not match the pace of Sondheim's rhythm. You can workshop and rehearse a musical for months and then find out the set is ruining the pace of the show in Tech.
The same is true for POTUS. A big set and evolving rooms slowed down the pacing of the show which is so important for comedy. A one-minute scene followed by a one minute transition with pop music so we can wait for the set RUINED THE SHOWS PACING. The show was so much funnier on the page.
This is why both shows were reviewed poorly and many will not get it if they haven't studied theater or directing.
This thread, as expected, is hard to keep track of. Sorry if someone posted this already, but here's the list of shows that didn't get any nominations at all:
--Is This a Room --Birthday Candles --Pass Over --Thoughts of a Colored Man --Chicken & Biscuits
Notably, they're all plays, which is probably just because there were more plays than musicals, so there wasn't as much to go around.
Every musical this season got at least 1 nomination - someone above mentioned Funny Girl getting totally shut out, but note that Jared Grimes got a well-deserved nomination.
The fact that POTUS: Or Behind Every Great Dumbass The are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive got 3 nominations, is a testament to how well the show was received by the nominating committee. In a season full of serious or darkly comedic plays the fact that a raunchy farce even got any love in the play categories says a lot. I know the odds of it winning are slim, as its Set nomination was a fluke/show of support for the show more then it actually being competitive, but does anyone think that Dratch might actually stand a chance of winning over Miller? IMO the surprise although welcome nomination to White, really throws a wrench in any chance Dratch had of winning.
I'm just over the moon for Shoshana Bean. What a well deserved nomination for someone who has been in the game since 2001. Not saying that's why she deserved the nomination, her performance earned it. But so glad to see her getting some great recognition.
I am so happy for Mare Winningham. She’s a remarkable actress. I hope she wins.

Neither show was generally reviewed poorly- in fact, they both received a positive reception from most critics. You can dislike them without rewriting history.
