Very exciting news! I've never seen this in a marathon day, not even the miniseries. I'll definitely be doing that as I've never been as taken with Perestroika as I am with Millenium Approaches and I think seeing them back-to-back will smooth out my issues with Part 2.
I'm curious to see if and how the staging/sets will be altered to accommodate a smaller stage. At least I think it's smaller? Or at least not as deep as the National, because that stage is DEEP. The set pulling back in Part 1 was impressive but then when it retreated further in Part 2, my mind was blown. The only Broadway house I can think of off the top of my head that could fully allow that is the Beaumont.

I imagine there will be some adjustments to both the depth and possibly width of the production, as the original stage has a very wide and extremely deep stage. But if anyone can make it work, it's Elliot.
And what a thrill. An incredible production. Shame about Tovey. He was a highlight for me and one of the best Joes I've ever seen.
@Markie Are you talking about the plays or the actors in those roles? Angels would be a revival and Harry Potter is a new play, so they compete in different top categories at the Tonys.
Though I am interested to see what categories the Angels actors are eligible in. In the original runs, Spinella was featured for Millennium Approaches and Lead for Perestroika. The reverse eligibility was true for Ron Liebman as Roy Cohn. I'm assuming both parts may be lead for this production, unless they throw the entire cast into featured.
I am so excited for this announcement and will start planning a trip in May from Texas even though I have one for this month coming up. My question is about the scheduling of both parts. I read on here that someone said he wanted to see both in one day which would be perfect for me to do as well if that is possibility. Does anyone know this early in if it will be? thanks And I am sad I won't see Russell Tovey as I love him in everything he does.

Yes I was talking about the actors but yeah I keep wondering how the committee would categorize Prior Walter since they would be shown simultaneously. If both Lane and Garfield get nominated for lead then they may split the vote and we will have a Parker win.
Oh god why am I wondering about their tony chances this early when I should be worrying about how I can afford to buy tickets for 2 2-part shows in the same month!?!??!

I don't think this season has a lack of outstanding musicals - including revivals (since this is play revival thread) - or an incredibly high number of plays. We were somewhat spoiled by last season's rare 13 new musicals and 4 big-ish musical revival showings.

Lane would be a slam dunk in Featured, but in leading he'd likely be up against his own co-star + Denzel Washington, Jamie Parker, Mark Rylance, maybe Chris Evans/Michael Cera, and Clive Owen. (And Michael Moore as himself.) I'll be excited to see how the production is reimagined for the new space.
If Andrew Garfield's performance is always as great as it was in the broadcast, I see him definitely taking Best Lead Actor. Hopefully they'll put Lane in featured because he would certainly win and I think Denise Gough could be a very strong contender in featured/lead actress. Honestly, I see this production sweeping, it's phenomenal. I'm thrilled that this show is coming back.

You have to remember it will go against Harry Potter in all technical Design awards. So it will have a very stiff competition and an exciting Tony Award evening! I can see acting awards sweep though for Angels. But I really can't see the tony committee putting Roy Cohn in the supporting category. Both Cohn and Walter are leads though in different parts.
It will be interesting to see how they petition the actors. The original production was able to have Spinella in Featured for Part 1 and Leading for Part 2 because the parts didn't open at the same time. I wonder if both Garfield and Lane will be placed in Leading Actor. Either way, I think this is finally be Lane's third Tony award.

I'd say it's a good season for revivals. We don't know if the original plays will be any better than the original musicals aside from word of mouth/reviews from out of town tryouts and the fact that a lot of the original musicals are based on pre-existing properties. Works for me. I can save some money.
I honestly wonder if they will try to have each Millenium Approaches and Peristroika considered jointly as Angels In America or separately when it comes to award season, considering both halves have won Best Play in 1993 and 1994. Or I could see the producers petitioning to allow the production as a whole to be considered for best Revival, but individual performances to be considered separately within each play.
Has something like this ever happened before?
The Norman Conquests were always considered a single production even in their original run. The Broadway Bound revival was cancelled quickly after the Brighton Beach Memoirs closed after 9 performances not allowing the two plays to be played in rep.
Wolf Hall Parts 1 and 2 were petitioned for and considered to a single play, including performances. We also have Harry Potter coming in, and those 2 "parts" at least do not work just by themselves so I strongly doubt they'll be petitioned separately.
I'd like Angels In America to be considered a single play but it will be interesting if it is considered as 2 separate plays. For one thing, it will mean more difficulty in recouping because Tony voters will have to see both parts of a limited 18week run instead of choosing to see just the part for which an actor/actress was specifically nominated (which might be moot if there an actors nominated for both parts, or different actors are nominated for different parts). I'm just rambling now.
The only real wish I have is they don't pull a Sunday In The Park With George, because these performances deserve Tony nods.

Valentina3 - I really hope they don't do that. the 18 week run makes me hopefully. Wasn't SUNDAY closer to 10-12?

I don't wish to be big headed... but .. told you so!
personally I found this whole production a bore. Nathan Lane aside, it's a mess. It's overlong and it looks really ugly. They will have to redesign it considerably to fit the Simon.
Andrew Garfield aside, I thought the casting was perfection. He had his moments, but, on screen, it came across as incredibly disingenuous and over the top. I was also not impressed with the set design. It looked haphazard and clunky yet baron.
This is all based on the NT Live screenings. I hope it translates better on stage.
And I found it to be anything but a mess with some of the best individual performances of the many different productions I have seen over the past two decades.
