^That's my guess to, most of the articles for the movie seems to hint that the movie's third act is where most of the differences will be; other than Alana Beck's new song and expanded role, Larry now a step-father to the Murphy family, deleted songs, possible new lines, etc.
ICYMI: Ben Platt cameos on tonight's Big Brother, introducing a high school-themed Veto Competition with an added prize of winning a screening of the new movie. The winner and her guests all cried at the end of the movie, though it was funny to hear one say, "Every song is a bop."

Watched Big Brother, then America's Got Talent last night, and when Platt appeared on AGT, my fiance said "Why is this old man everywhere? Do they really think its not going to succeed?"
"Ok ok ok ok ok ok ok. Have you guys heard about fidget spinners!?" ~Patti LuPone
I was surprised that several had heard both of HIM and of the film. (or perhaps that's just more propaganda) That being said, they did truly seem to enjoy the film.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

does your unnecessarily rude fiancé know what promo is?
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."

So hi everyone. This is my first post here since theater shut down on March 12, 2020. It was so sad, along with everything else that was going on that I just couldn’t deal with theater chat boards. And I hope to hell that the reopening of Broadway theater and live theater around the country goes well.
But to digress from live theater and get into this thread, I think the DEH movie is going to be a huge success, and a serious candidate for the Best Picture Oscar. I have reasons for feeling this way which I doubt anyone cares about. Without the specter of COVID, I think the film would be a box office blockbuster. So now I’m on the record and if I’m wrong, bring on the mocking.

I'm happy to provide some of my reasoning, though I readily accept the fact that my predication is very speculative. Much of it is based on the trajectory of the musical.
DEH came out of nowhere to become a smash hit, meaning there was no source material for the show whatsoever. Why?
For one thing, it told a compelling, and to many, a controversial story, a story that resonated across a very wide demographic, from adolescents through their grandparents, and a story that produced very emotional reactions. To some, Evan was a hero, for others, he was somewhat of a villain, and to most there was some of both in what was a very complex character. (The authors have discussed, in detail, that this was a deliberate choice on their part, they understood both sides of the argument). But the result of it was that people TALKED about it far and wide. It generated discussion and debate.
Another obvious reason is that it has a great score, and it's just entertaining.
And of course, they show got great reviews, went on to receive the Best Musical Tony.
So why won't these same things translate to the film? By and large, I think they will, though I have no idea at all how critics will react to it, because I think some will go into it looking for blood to spill.
So in a nutshell, those are some of my reasons why I think the film will be a Best Picture candidate. It's entertaining, it has a good if not great score, and most of all, it's a story that cuts across many demographics and provokes discussion. And films with good stories that provoke discussion generally fare well.
