This has “holiday tourist bait” written all over it, and as it should. I know so many families who come in from out of town for the winter holiday season who would kill to see this, and they’d be foolish not to try to take advantage of that kind of box office guarantee.
Obviously, that’s casting permitting, but I think they can easily get folks like Sara and Julia to come back to it if they have other obligations that are preventing them now. Or continue to get exciting known and less known talent coming through every few months.
I think some people bought tickets when the extension was announced before it was known the current cast was only extending until 9/5. Yes, it was a crapshoot as to who may be performing. But to say don’t buy a ticket doesn’t help when you already did.

It makes a lot more sense to me than you posting this like you’re better than those people or something, lol.
This is a high profile revival and a lot of exciting rumors were thrown around…I was hoping there’d be casting that might entice me to revisit the show again, but I admit this new cast just doesn’t excite me and I’m bummed.
While I’m sure that losing Bareilles will dent the box office, I think people continue to underestimate this production overall. It’s a fairly low-cost production with something going for it just as valuable as a star: unequivocally fantastic word of mouth and broad appeal. I see no reason why, if it extends again, it wouldn’t continue to exceed expectations going into the new year.
As for those unenthused by the new casting announcement: in the words of Bernadette Peters as the Witch, “Whooooooooooooo cares!?”
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
Sebastian Arcelus was a phenomenal Roger in RENT 20+ years ago. Curious to hear him now. Not wild about SJB in this role but Krysta's voice will be perfection.
Interesting move re Montego Glover- shes got quite a resume, and I'm curious to see what she does with it. Definitely will take advantage of what I'm sure will be a dip in sales, especially on weeknights.

Sebastian and Stephanie also performed together in Wicked, I think both on tour and then on Broadway a few weeks before they got married. He was a pretty great Fiyero at that time.
I have to say that all these re-casting choices are ON POINT - this show is easily one of the MUST SEE events of this Broadway season. I just wish that Sondheim were alive to see this..:he would be so pleased.
I understand not loving all of the casting choices, but it seems like actors are going to come and go quickly in this revival, there’s bound to be someone who excites you.
Also, if it runs through the spring, I have no doubt Bareilles will return, as she will be a major Tony contender.
It doesn't matter who they cast, people would be complaining.
I wonder how much the connections Arcelus & Block had to Patina Miller through being involved in TV show Madame Secretary played into their casting? If they spoke to her, might she have said, "Hey we're all having a real blast doing this show," & then that influenced them into signing on?
Unlikely, & I know how unpopular she is, but for the Witch it might be interesting to see how Karen Olivo could handle the role? Maybe if she only had to do Friday-Sunday she'd be willing?
Cinderella seems an even more difficult role to continually recast. Seeing Phillipa Soo was perfection. I wonder how Lindsay Mendez would sing the role? Or would she be a better Baker's Wife?
Does it look like "Prada" may not go forward right away? I would love for more people to see Javier Muñoz as the Baker.
Lindsay Mendez, Javier Muñoz, Karen Olivo.
I'm sure there were people who complained when Pearl Bailey wascl cast as Dolly and Cab Calloway as Horace Vandergeld.

In her NYTimes profile, Julia Lester also expressed a desire to return- I could see her snagging a Tony nomination, as well. And it’d be very deserved.

For me personally, this casting news would be enough for me to go back if I lived locally but it's not interesting enough for me to make a return trip or add a re-visit to my next spree of Broadway shows on a trip. But I'm happy for those who are excited by it!
How accurate is SeatGeek typically with its "casting alerts?" For the weekend of Sept. 9, it shows Patina playing all performances on Friday and Saturday, but then Montego playing the Sunday matinee on Sept. 11? I'm just curious if that's a site error or if Patina has already announced an absence that day.
It's not an error. There's a whole list of cast absences on the show's main SeatGeek page:
The role of the Baker’s Wife will not be played by Stephanie J. Block for the Saturday, October 1, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. performances.
The role of the Witch will not be played by Patina Miller at the following performances: Thursday, August 11, 7 p.m.; Wednesday, August 24, 2 p.m.; Wednesday, August 31, 2 p.m.; Sunday, September 11, 3 p.m.; and all performances Friday, October 7 through Sunday, October 9. Additionally, Patina Miller will not be playing the Witch for all Tuesday-Thursday performances from September 6 through October 16.
Montego Glover will not be playing the Witch for all Friday-Sunday performances from September 6 through October 16.
The role of Cinderella will not be played by Phillipa Soo at the Saturday, September 3, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. performances.
The role of Rapunzel’s Prince will not be played by Joshua Henry at the following performances: all performances Thursday, August 25 through Sunday, August 28; Saturday September 23 through Sunday, September 25; and Tuesday, October 11 through Sunday October 16.

Thank you! So sorry I missed that. I have family in town that day who want to see the show -- I've seen Patina three times now, so I'm excited to get a chance to see Montego!
Random question: Did anyone happen to see Linda Mugleston as The Witch in the 2002 revival? I'd love to hear what that was like as she's such a reliable performer.

Totally agree Carlos -- I thought it was near perfect and could only think of how proud and pleased Mr. Sondheim would have been.
