With only a few musicals actually set for a revival and with Hello Dolly closing in a month. I’m wondering what people would like to see revived. Part of the big struggle though is to revive it for a reason.
Mine are:
Funny Girl (Though I feel that it’s almost unspoken that it won’t be revived while Babs is still living)
Titanic
Chess
Little Mermaid (but major work done)
Tarzan (with major changes. Because I do feel like it could work)
Sound of Music
Beauty and the Beast (because it never should have closed when it did)
Mame (cher and Meryl. especially after seeing their chemistry through the mamma Mia press)
Aida (i know I always suggest it. Tveit. Erivo. Osnes/Ashford)
Joseph (with someone like Jonathan Groff)
It will never happen, but I'd love to see someone give Mack and Mabel another run. It's probably my favorite non-Dolly score of Jerry Herman's.
I'm still dreaming of a Donna Murphy-led Mame too.
I know its original run is still very recent, but I would love to see a revival of The Scottsboro Boys sometime down the road.
Mayor. A Charles Strouse score with a gay hero.
Although many gays at the time didn't regard him as such.
The Who's TOMMY
MAME - starring Bernadette Peters (she looks young enough to play the part) or Christine Baranski
I CAN GET IR FOR YOU WHOLESALE - Not sure what went wrong with it 55 years ago, but this could be open to a new revival. I don't think it has 'Streisand' as attached to it as 'Funny Girl'.
It's time: Kiss of the Spider Woman.
It's too soon, but I want it anyway: Caroline, or Change.
Funny Girl
Kiss of the Spiderwoman
Caroline, or Change
Mame
The Secret Garden
City of Angels
Two big ones for me are parade and ragtime
The four revivals I would kill to see in my lifetime:
- Bart Sher/Lincoln Center's Into the Woods at the Vivian Beaumont
- Evita, starring Lady Gaga
- Kiss of the Spider Woman, starring Heather Headley
- Mame, starring Christine Baranski or Jane Krakowski
Also echoing Funny Girl, Caroline, or Change, and Ragtime.
Christine Baranski played Mame 12 years ago at the Kennedy Center, at 66 years of age she is precisely the age Mame is supposed to be at the END of the show.
Putting things into perspective: Rosalind Russell was 48 when she first played her. Angela Lansbury was 41
Yes, Lucille Ball was 62 when she did the film...and we all know how THAT turned out.
You can read the review for Baranski's Mame here
I personally would love to see a revival of "Promises, Promises" - the real one not that flawed imitation starring Chenoweth that was produced 8 years ago
I feel like now would be the perfect time for a Bring in da Noise revival.
"Revivals and movies, why doesn't anyone do new musicals anymore?" - peabody-winner Theresa Rebeck through Grace in the Smash Pilot.
Having said that, Mame with Donna Murphy & Jane Krakowski alternating Vera and Mame :)
Personally, I'm dying for a Man of La Mancha revival.
Two Gentlemen of Verona
A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine

The Secret Garden
I Love My Wife
Will Rogers Follies

I know it wouldn’t make any money on Broadway unless it had 2 huge stars, but I would love to see a production of I Do, I Do. Even if it’s a limited concert presentation.

I dont know if this is "due" for a revival but I am dying for a production of Next To Normal with Rachel Bay Jones.

A Bart Sher/Lincoln Center Into the Woods sounds amazing and I would also be very interested in a Gaga revival.
I'd like to see a high quality (Hello Dolly esque) revival of The Music Man
And I have always wanted a revival of Steel Pier with a completely new book
Let's do Mack and Mabel in 6 years for its 50th anniversary. PLEASE. Lincoln Center? Roundabout?
And Ragtime with an all-star cast. So, so relevant and so many of the lines feel like they were written two weeks ago.
