I believe it's been that* way from the beginning. It's a cheeky nod to golden age productions, mainly when choreographers began directing. I have a West Side poster that reads "Entire production directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins."

Given her relationship with Escola, we have to presume its been discussed- is she enough of a name to sell tickets? If Titus Burgess is, i imagine she would be too, so I wonder if she just doesnt want to do it?
As Obviously perfect as Sedaris is for this, I agree that Bridget Everett would be perfect casting, and would get me to see this again for sure. Shes such a unique talent, and also a kind, smart, well respected person- no one deserves a shot at this more
Everett is brilliant- if you're not able to catch one of her shows at Joe's Pub or elsewhere, you should at the very least watch her tragically short lived show on Max with Jeff Hiller called Somebody Somewhere. But I'm not sure that either she or Sedaris would be up to a Broadway schedule. Sedaris especially hasn't done much live performance in a very long time.

Yes! Somebody Somewhere is unequivocally terrific.
Speaking of Jeff Hiller, he'd also made a handsome Mary Todd. Or an interesting Lincoln opposite Everett. That's probably more of my Somebody Somewhere revival dreams than anything, though.

I’ve tweeted this same thought out into the universe, with Hiller as Abe
Amy Sedaris would be great, but you have to wonder if she even wants to do a sprint of a show like this anymore. She does a lot of her own projects and has thoroughly been in writing and scripted TV for a long time now.
Also agree on Bridgett Everett. She'd be wonderful.
Just remember that Cole Escola wrote an incredibly demanding role. Like, a big part of their Actors on Actors discussion with Darren Criss is that Mary doesn't really get much of a chance to catch her breath or sip some water, let alone use the restroom during the show. Not everyone wants to take on that challenge.

i've wondered the same thing for some time. has she done anything on stage in NY since that play at MTC 25 years ago? i know she went on the Letterman show for the first few times around then and talked about how she didn't like the schedule of that sort of commitment. i've always wondered if Louise was written specifically for her, as that seems an especially ideal outcome for Escola to have played opposite Sedaris, per their previous projects. wouldn't it be perfect if she filled in for a short stint so Bianca Leigh could take a much deserved vacation?

I guess I am in the minority here- I found the show to be silly- not funny and basically a waste of time. I sat second row center and was hoping to love a sophisticated satire- or at least a great comedy- it was neither, IMO.
