Regardless of Whether ‘Stereophonic’ Is Based on Fleetwood Mac and the Making of ‘Rumours,’ the Play Is Riveting
Playwright David Adjmi, for his part, has brushed off the comparisons. ‘There is no real story,’ he told Variety recently. ‘The whole thing is invented.’ Happily, it is a beautifully crafted and consistently compelling work on its own terms.
"Certainly, on viewing “Stereophonic” a second time, I was less distracted by the similarities, and therefore better able to appreciate and enjoy what is, without question, a beautifully crafted and consistently compelling work on its own terms. That’s not minor praise, given that the play runs nearly three hours with an intermission, and under Daniel Aukin’s meticulous direction, its pace is gentle and deliberate throughout."
I think time has been really good to this show. And will continue to be.
People who liked it last year remember how great it was and seeing it again in a bigger theater reinforces what they already knew - this is the best play in a very long time.
"Adjmi’s play is long — too long — because he’s attempting to accurately capture, documentary style, the often banal artistic process. Sizable scenes will be spent adjusting drum cymbals or having a singer redo a section over and over again. Reg, while high, has a frivolous speech about houseboats that goes on forever.
That’s all well and good, but those slice-of-life bits don’t always hold the audience’s attention. Some are plain indulgent. Other plays have been more successful at finding profundity in the ho-hum, such as Annie Baker’s “The Flick.”
Still, “Stereophonic,” directed by Daniel Aukin, is undeniably transportive, and it’s a pleasure to be immersed in this creatively robust decade for a while. David Zinn’s neat set is the control room of a recording studio, with a soundproof booth upstage behind glass. It casually evokes the ‘70s without going full-blown “Brady Bunch” kitchen."
I haven't even seen it yet, and I'm absolutely giddy reading these!
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
I'm very happy I stayed awake to read these reviews. Now THIS show should serve as the impetus for certain artists to advocate for and encourage the creation of new art!!
I am so So SO happy I read the positive reports from the first previews and saw this before the entire run sells out. Spellbinding theater, loved it so much!
I saw the final preview on Thursday night. My experience is in line with all the raves on this board and across these reviews. One of the best theatrical experiences ive ever had in my life. I can count on less than two hands evenings in the theatre that will stay with me for forever and this is unquestionably one of them.
I saw this two weeks ago, before all these raves, and I was truly transported. About 40 minutes in, I kind of stopped the show in my mind and thought "I am seeing one of the best shows of the last several years." It is amazing. And if you are able to sit close, you will truly feel trapped in that recording studio with them, which in this case is a good thing. Spectacular performances as well. I can't wait to go back to see this cast again.
It was nice waking up to seeing these reviews. I loved the production and can't wait to go back again.
Earlier this season I thought Appropriate was the shoe in for Best Play but think it might go to Stereophonic. This is my version of Sophie's Choice this season.
"I hope your Fanny is bigger than my Peter."

Well you can have both! Appropriate has been rightfully deemed a revival.

I must have missed that so thanks for the info. :)

Well, with Appropriate deemed a Revival, it looks like that locked up that, and Stereophonic will easily win Best Play.
I exchanged a ticket that was Rear Mezz, Row A, Seat 101 for a Front Mezz, Row C, Seat 111 ticket.
Safe to say that the new seat will offer a much better view of the action?
I usually try to be as central as possible. But, in this case, given all the dicussion about heads being cut off in the studio space, I opted to sit a little off-center, so I could be a row closer.
Saw this on Wednesday and agree this is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Spectacular performances all around, and I’m so excited for a cast album. So happy for these reviews and hoping it might lead to an extension through the summer, I’d love to see this again on my next trip in July.
“ "Full songs of Seven Roads, Drive, & Masquerade. A new song, & In Your Arms & Domino, which you hear 10 seconds of [onstage]. Bright & East of Eden. Sarah Pidgeon destroys that one. I personally can't listen to it. She's amazing."
