They should combine the the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons into one Tony Award ceremony and just open up all the categories to at least one extra nominee or something.
I am sure that the Tony committee is hard at work figuring out the logistics of how to deal with things this season.
One ONE hand, it's unfair to the shows that have opened this season/were suppose to open this season/will open still but at a later date to lump them in with the shows of next season. Less shows will be recognized. Less shows, actors, designers, etc have a chance to be nominated and featured. Less has the opportunity to benefit from the exposure.
On the OTHER hand, with these delays happening there are so many logistical issues with what are the new rules. Do the allow shows that were meant to open to counted? Do they have the avalibility at Radio City to actually hold the awards? Do they allow shows to choose if they wish to be considered in this season or in next season?
I mean some things I could see happening.... no televised awards for the season but allow the shows that would have qualified to open and be nominated and awarded with no pomp and circumstance but then feature them on the next Tonys. Delay the awards until fall and go all out still but shows that were not planned to open but do don't count (AKA if a show has always been planned to open in July, it still counts towards NEXT season even if the awards are held in August for this season). Kind of going with the thing I said above about making nominations and winners without a grand ceremony. That but still have a sort of showcase of the shows themselves. Not just nominees but winners AND pretty much any show still open. Just two hours of performances from every show on Broadway to advertise to people that Broadway has survived, come see a show.
I have no doubt that they are working at home on skype calls laying out all their possibilities to try and honor shows as fairly and realistically as possible as well as working with the unions and the shows to come to some kind of agreement and understanding that works for everyone. I am sure in my heart of hearts that they ALL will agree and try to make some kind of honoring for the season and awards happen even if it on a lesser then planned scale. Times have been very dark not just for Broadway but for the world in general. Something like the Tonys could be a light at the end of this dark tunnel we are in to boast the spirits of fans, actors, crew, and NYC as a whole.
''They should combine the the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons into one Tony Award ceremony and just open up all the categories to at least one extra nominee or something.''
Boy, I hate that idea. As it is, a number of Broadway shows open in the spring, just before the Tony deadline, so they can stay fresh in the minds of Tony voters. Because of the ADHD of certain voters, it's not unusual for shows that opened in the previous fall and summer to get short shrift at nomination time. By combining two seasons into one, that disadvantages them even further. For instance, that means ''Moulin Rouge!,'' which opened in July 2019, might not be Tony-eligible until May 2021 - nearly 2 years later and probably long after its original cast has left. And ''The Inheritance,'' which opened in Nov. 2019, probably would be competing for a Best Play slot against shows that would be opening in April 2021.
If possible, I'd rather see a modified Tony Awards in August/ September that celebrates the past season and is a giant showcase for everything that's reopened on the Great White Way.
I hope Roundabout can end up postponing Caroline or Change

The show's premise reminds me of War Paint- kinda coincidental that Michael Korie wrote lyrics for both shows. I can't wait! At least this gives Tom Kitt some creative consolation if his Jagged Little Pill were to close.
^It sounded more like for archival purposes/as a reference for when/if they ever reopen. It wasn't some fancy Netflix multi-camera setup that will ever see the light of day.
I've got some friends at LCT, I believe they moved up the B-Roll filming date because they knew a shutdown of some kind was coming. It was definitely filmed with at least a couple cameras, but certainly not for Netflix or anything like that.
Yeah I read that first update about what Erika said and got so excited for a second but it makes a lot of sense that they would've just shifted B-roll around and/or recorded it for the archive. I think a full Netflix-quality proshot is a lot to ask but... DANG, I can dream right?
So so desperate to hear/see more of this show, really hoping they pull through and it sees the light of day at the Beaumont.
Let's hope the show still gets to open someday, and if so, a video recording won't be as necessary (though it's always nice for people who don't live in NY).
But if it never gets to open, then thank god for any recording they might have made - regardless of the quality or distribution. Even if it just ends up at TOFT and nowhere else, then at least it will be available for the public to view.
And even if it just ends up being a private archival recording that won't be available to the public (not even at TOFT)...well, that would suck, but there's some comfort knowing that it exists, at the very least. And one day we can hope for either a leak, or some form of legitimate release for public viewing.
We may have only heard a few songs from the press event video, but I had this pegged to be the musical surprise hit of the season just because of the potential of the material, creative team, cast, LCT reputation, etc. To be honest, I would have pegged this as the best musical nominee that could pull it off. I had my ticket ready for first preview and everything.
I can't imagine anyone on a creative team of this magnitude would be ok with a dress rehearsal of a world-premiere musical with no out of town tryout being released into the world as a definitive recording. I'm sure it's good, but even the best shows grow a lot over previews not only in material but in performances and tech elements.
It could be a good idea for like a 1-night-only fundraiser, but bootlegs of it would be up my midnight.
Now that they’ve announced re-opening dates, let’s hope they keep some of our favorite “memories” from last year’s “previews.” Lol (It’s an interesting, fun re-read and insight into how we were coping with the beginning of the pandemic)
