They have to get permission, but Andy won't be left out in the cold. It won't hurt his chances. Poor guy.

Given the physicality of the role, even if it's just a sprain, this is going to be tough.
Waiting with baited breath, as we are supposed to attend Monday...

Call it Deja Vu or Groundhog Day. Tonights performance unfortunately was my second time for interruption of the show ( the first being the opening night where the turntable did not work. A physician who was seated next to me attended to Mr. Karl and told me he thought it was a severe strain. X rays this evening or tomorrow will reveal what the actual problem is. I asked several of the ushers if tomorrows shows will go on and they did not have an answer. I sat in row K on far right orchestra side and saw a commotion but did not see if Andy fell off the ladder or just fell. It would be an act of god to see him recover enough to do both shows tomorrow and open on Monday - even if it is a severe strain. As others have mentioned, the show did go on after about 20 minutes, but he clearly could not move around without assistance. The audience gave him several ovations as "the show went on" and finished where it let off at the point that Mr. Karl was injured.
In 1977 at a Chicago performance of Side by Side by Sondheim , I was seated in the Orchestra when Cyril Ritchard ( Captain Hook in the original movie Peter Pan) collapsed and died from a heart attack. That will live with me forever and this evening at Grounhog Day, the call for "is there a doctor in the house?" brought back that chilling moment. Very fortunately it did not have the same outcome
While reading this thread 3 things come to mind:
1) I hope he's going to be okay. He's a brilliant talent and quite charming onstage.
2) Can you imagine what his understudy is going through mentally at this very moment? Karl's role is massive and I would imagine the understudy hasn't had much opportunity to maneuver that complex set yet.
3) Even though Karl insisted, I'm a little concerned that he was allowed to continue the performance and potentially cause further injury without a thorough and immediate medical evaluation at a hospital.
I sincerely hope everything works out okay.
Bummer for Andy Karl...I hear press were there invited starting last night-Thurs, tonight-Fri and both performances on Saturday.
Dark Sunday as it opens Monday night!

So, would it be correct to assume then that Broadway shows in general do NOT have a doctor or medical personnel on premises? Just wondering if there are exceptions, i.e. Cirque show with acrobatics or Spiderman. Any information/insight would be appreciated.
Thanks!
My nephew's husband is Andy Karl's dresser - as he was for ROCKY. I will try to reach him, but doubt that he will know anything before anyone else.
That is horrible news and all the best to Andy to recover. That said, I have to say, this will end up being great PR for him and the show..
The number of people on here who seem more concerned about their tickets than Mr Karl astounds me.'...Oh no--I have tickets, how inconsiderate!'

That sucks... feel bad for him Besides for the pain...must be so anxiety provoking with the show opening in two days and all.

I second that emotion SweetLips.

If he broke his leg, I predict that they will be dark Saturday so that the understudies can prepare for opening. If he is out for a month or more, then why would he be given any consideration for a Tony nom?

definelty doesn't look too bad! He has no broken bones which is good, but he may be out after he checks with a specialist. Hope for a speedy recovery
I dont normally like to speculate ... but since Andy himself mentioned the knee. He could have sprained or torn a ligament or meniscus. Good thing is he can most likely wear a brace for that but his ability to perform will depend on the level of swelling and pain. Hopefully he will not require surgery - that will be for him and his doctor to determine - but I expect an orthopedist would have him take several days off if it's serious.
I really feel for Andy and everyone involved and hope he has no serious injury to his knee and that he is feeling much better soon.

This show has been snake bit from the first preview.
Hopefully Mr. Karl's injury isn't too bad.

i) In order to be eligible, an actor or actress must perform in the role on the production’s opening night and must perform in the minimum number of ..
taken from the Tony rule book. Hopefully he gets better and performs Monday night. If it means resting today and Sunday to be able to perform on opening. Would be a shame to further injure himself by doing two shows today.
The guy is a total champ, he injures himself and goes back on cane in hand to finish the show.

I have been teary eyed all morning... I hope my man is okay... He is ROCKY and a TRUE FIGHTER!! KEEP ON STANDING, MR. KARL!!!
This role is so complex... so psychically demanding... wish they could give him a special TONY
Ugh... I hope he is okay. Poor guy... especially after he said in two other interviews that he was getting tired of Broadway... I hope he comes back stronger than ever... what a talent.
That's awful. To have worked so hard and then to have to miss the formal opening. Hope he is ok. Just wondering...would they ever consider delaying the opening by say 1 week to let his body heal? The last thing he want to do is push himself and then injure it more.
What an absolute CHAMP!
I've always had a ton of respect for him (just count how many different incredible things he did in "Legally Blonde" and he is wonderfully talented and hard working. I hope to see him make a full recovery!
Now, as for Tony elidability, if I am the lead producers on the show, I'm calling the League and the Wing and the Committees to find out all my options. Can I move official opening this close? Would he be able to go on JUST Monday night with a brace and maybe a cane at some points and then give him time off?
When I was in "Bye Bye Birdie" a few years back, our Kim hurt her knee the day before the show, and we braced the hell out of knee and kept her on crutches or sitting down every time she wasn't onstage (and made some adjustments onstage so she could be sitting more or leaning against another actor). I haven't seen Groundhog Day, and while I can't imagine his role is anything like Kim in BBB, maybe they can help him out.
