I was there yesterday and they very much do not mandate masks inside the building. It was.. bizarre to say the least. You got a stamp on your hand saying you’re vaccinated, like they are going to look at everyone that had their mask down…

It's too bad the BWW staff can't add that jarring detail to the press release!
I'm confused from a Covid stand-point, have they dropped the whole quarantining thing? Like, if I'm in Phantom and get a positive test, am I out of the show for a day? Like, I guess, I'm confused by shutting down for just one show. What does that solve? And not being snarky, just asking from a protocol standpoint."
Curious about this too. I know that at least in some cases, it's just because of a lack of coverage from pre-scheduled vacations. From what I gathered from his social media post this morning, Cursed Child did a last-minute put-in for Spencer Larue, one of the swings, during the time the matinee would've been yesterday so he could make his Scorpius debut last night and prevent another cancellation.

The question is where and how are cast or crew getting exposed?
Are there clauses in place to ask those involved in the shows to not engage in risky behaviours? I can’t imagine they want this to continue, but I don’t know how you prevent this, apart from really creating a bubble and not letting anyone socialize outside of it… which isn’t really possible given people have families, kids, etc.
Not sure what they can do… and I fear many shows closing if they constantly have to cancel several shows."
why are you assuming we're getting exposed bc we're irresponsible? I was exposed for the first time (that I know of, at least) at school earlier this week, where everyone is required to wear masks and be vaccinated to get into any of the buildings.
My partner & I had tickets to a bunch of shows in March 2020, which were obviously canceled. Most years we take a few Broadway trips a year & it's just our favorite thing in the world. We were so excited to finally get back for a week's worth of shows the week after Christmas this year, but with everything going on we just elected to cancel our whole trip. These cancelations are causing so much anxiety & we were meant to stay with some elderly relatives & the whole thing felt unsafe & uncertain.
I am in tears about this. Theater is basically the most life-giving thing in my life & it's been so painful not having it & I am so angry COVID is continuing to endanger this art form that I love so much. I know everyone is sick of this. I know everyone wants theater to be back & thriving. But I am just so, so sad & angry right now, y'all.
I know people are starting to get anxious and fear is rising about the infections. I feel badly that many are so scared. I know a scientist who explained it to me this way and it comforted me. Viruses do not want to kill people, they want to be able to thrive and replicate. If a host dies, the virus does not succeed. So the Omicron should be spreading much faster and be much much weaker so as to not do harm and keep its hosts functioning. Similar to a common cold. He was very hopeful that this is the last wave before it peters out. People just need to take their universal precautions, get vaccinated and follow CDC guidelines. Let’s hope this is true.
I am glad Broadway is taking this seriously and hopefully things are on an even keel soon. Take care everyone. xo

Betty, I heard something similar to that being discussed on the news today. I had never heard it put that way before, about a weakening virus like that. While the doctors said it’s obviously too early to tell if this will be the last variant because of its weakened state, it did kind of makes me feel a little bit better, too.

I'm there with you. My wife and I take two trips a year from Los Angeles to see as many shows as we can, and had one aborted in late March 2020. Our first trip back - which includes several of the shows we had planned to see back then - is now set for early January. We're both fully vaxxed and boosted, so we have minimal concerns about getting seriously sick even if we're exposed. But the thought of spending so much on flights and hotel only to have the shows we want to see canceled at the last minute, with no opportunity to rebook, is making us seriously (and with no small amount of anger at the unvaxxed who allow this to continue to spread and mutate after two years) consider canceling again. I know I'll be heartbroken if we do...I can't tell you how much I've been looking forward to returning.
I understand the need to cancel performances but my trips to the city include a 90 minute train ride (and that doesn't include the drive to the train station, parking the car and then getting from Penn Station to the theater district). It's possible that on one of these trips I'll get to the theatre, only to find a cancellation.notice taped to the door.
I guess I should plan each trip with an alternate plan in mind...at least for the near future.
I was at Moulin Rouge tonight. I don't understand why they didnt test earlier, the audience was filled with disappointment. I don't think the sting would've been as bad if the preshow hadn't already begun and the countdown on the conductor tv's were happening. No one had any idea this was happening, and it was quite a trek to get to midtown, sit down at a theater for 10 minutes past curtain and be VERY quickly ushered out.
"The audience at tonight’s performance ofBroadway’sMoulin Rouge!was seated and waiting for the music to start when the show was canceled due to a positiveCovidtest result within the company. The result apparently had been received just prior to curtain.
The audience was ushered out of the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Producers are expected to announce an updated schedule performance Friday.""
So they’re cancelling because of one positive covid test?"
My only guesses on this is because they didn't have time to test for further exposure, since it was right at curtain and they'd already all been around each other prepping for the show?

A lot of people kept theirs on, but probably half of the audience was unmasked. It was very bizarre."
Staff are not all masked either. Anyone know how they can get away with a no mask mandate but BWAY requires? I find it crazy for them not having any regard for the health and safety of those attending the show.

Doubtfire canceled by 4PM I think, allowing audience members to get tickets for something else or for most to not leave their homes to find out it was canceled when they arrived at the theater. I don't know why the timing of the testing can't be as such that everyone tests before leaving the theater at night so they know for the next day what the deal is. Imagine flying in to NYC to see certain shows, only to have them cancel.

We are at a crossroads. Either we figure out a new protocol/approach that results in few if any cancellations, or we are going to have a hiatus for the winter. There's really only one truly interesting story in this, and its initials are TMM.
Oh, and re petering out, if the Spanish Flu showed anything it was that an omicronesque variant precipitated the great petering.
I’ve just been messaging with a friend in one of the shows that was cancelled today. (He’s tested positive, had covid two years ago, double vaxed and booster.) He said that don’t believe that there’s just a one case thing in the theatre. For their show there were over 14 people that tested positive. He doesn’t believe that the show will be back until after the weekend at the earliest.
Looking at this realistically here. This will be a death sentence for many shows: the complete cancellation of multiple shows with positive cases, the requirements of vax pass, the inflation in tickets, the lack of tourists coming in for the holidays. We will be seeing a huuuuge drop off this winter. (Ie. Tina, Jagged, Girl From the North, Doubtfire&hellip
They can't test the cast/crew on their way out at night because that poses a HUGE concern for what happens on their travels home, during the day, on their travels to the theater. Not sure if the call times for the cast have changed, but usually most of them aren't required to be there until 30min before curtain. So not sure how testing works. Are they now called much earlier to the show and just have to wait around to test everyone?
Cancelling a show while the audience is seated feels like a final straw of sustainability. If these shows followed all protocols then it's the protocols that are problematic and not sustainable. Finding out a show is cancelled a few hours beforehand allows folks to get tickets to something else, not ideal but folks can still have a night out. With the reports of two shows cancelling with a seated audience, I would think even locals aren't going to bother until things (hopefully) stabilize again.
This surge has come on so strong I hope it flares out quickly (as others have more elegantly noted).

100%. The entire evening is ruined. And most people don't live in Midtown. This kind of ridiculous procedure will close many shows because people won't want to deal with that for weeks on end.
Exactly! I work walking-distance from midtown and intended to see a show tonight (it would only be my second since the pandemic), but opted not to purchase a ticket this morning because of the cancellations/uptick.

I am by no means assuming or trying insinuate anything. I am just trying to understand what producers may be thinking and how they may try to further prevent this from happening.
I think my posts later on in this thread sort of expand on that.
A sherlock carol and the alchemist were cancelled tonight. I was on line going in at 6:45 they were saying outside a sherlock carol has been cancelled and the other 3 shows are playing. When I got up to the box office the attendant told me my show the alchemist was cancelled tonight. I told him they said outside only sherlock carol was cancelled, he said the alchemist was also cancelled just now.
