It's too early for a love thread (imo), but there's been some press coming out for the show, not each of which warrants its own thread.
So, post preview reactions or press articles here!
I guess there was a 25 minute press preview today I'm seeing through twitter.
Here's some of what was posted in one article:
"The story opens with a “South Park”-esque voice over for the three people on stage: Mormon, Jesus, and Moroni..."
"This musical has the potential to truly offend. And not just the “Oh my, did they just say f*** on television?” sort of offensiveness. We’re talking the kind where two young Mormons — Elders Price and Cunningham — fresh out of their Mormon training head off to Uganda only to be greeted in song by Mafala Hatimbi to the tune of “Has-A-Diga-Eee-Bo-Eye”. Naturally, the song in English translates to “F*** the Gods.”
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist.
Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino.
This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more.

I was at the press preview today, and it was FANTASTIC. So funny, and really came across as old-fashioned musical theatre... with a lot of curses (in explaining that we'd be seeing the first 25 minutes of the show, we were advised, "You'll know it's over when everyone sings 'c*nt', and they all bow."). And there's a song that makes "Totally F*CKed" from Spring Awakening seem like a nursery rhyme in comparison.
So so funny. I didn't know a lot about this musical going in -- and I'm not a South Park fan -- but I'm so excited to see it now. And Andrew Rannells totally blew me away... he's really perfect in his role.
I think my favorite thing of all during this production will be how many pearl clutchers, reviewers among them, who claim that they were shocked, appalled, and offended, and demand refunds or the show to be shut down because it's in such poor taste.
Really? YOU went to go see a musical called the Book of MORMON created by the South Park and Team America guys? and you were shocked and offended? Wow. Just wow.
I know it hasn't happened yet, but I'll just say it know. The unending stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me.
"I'm an American, Damnit!!! And if it's three things I don't believe in, it's quitting and math."
"I've spent this entire write-up telling you what you probably already knew-- The Book of Mormon is both a classical musical and wickedly, raunchily funny. But if anything it may be even more than you're expecting--more clever, more inspired by musicals of the past, and above all more generous to the religion that inspired it. There will be an unbelievable amount of attention on this show when it begins previews at the end of February, but if what I saw is any indication of the full product, it will be more than deserving of it." Trey Parker And Matt Stone's The Book Of Mormon Is Wicked And Clever
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.
I found their comments to be a bit of a let down. I was hoping for something that showed a real stance.
"The production may attempt to entertain audiences for an evening, but the Book of Mormon as a volume of scripture will change people's lives forever by bringing them closer to Christ."
"All our dreams can come true -- if we have the courage to pursue them." -- Walt Disney
We must have different Gods. My God said "do to others what you would have them do to you". Your God seems to have said "My Way or the Highway".
Idk- Mormons are generally cooler than many other religions about the jokes and such. I think it happens to them so much, they are pretty used to it. They've actually been pretty sympathetic even to other religions who get mocked since they know the feeling. I don't think they'll be a huge uproar over this- at least not from the Mormon end. Certainly not from The Church itself. I think the greater problem will be decency councils and such.
Watch this be the show that propels Broadway shows to succumb to a 'rating' system.

This was just in The New York Times and this portion of the 3 page article caught my attention:
"Ms. Garefino said content advisory warnings will be printed on tickets for the show. Asked if the Eugene O’Neill Theater was taking any additional security precautions, Ms. Garefino said the theater “knew it was time to update some stuff, and they did,” but declined to provide details."
