I was just looking at the new pics of Chandra Wilson in 'Chicago', and couldn't help noticing how ugly Charlotte d'Amboise's Roxie dress is. Is that always the same costume for the end of the show? I know the one in the beginning has a black-lace overlay kind of thing, but this one is just really bad. Maybe the costumes are just starting to look REALLY dated?

Yup. Roxie has been wearing that same satin costume (with the chiffon sleeves) for the 2nd Act of the show since the revival opened on Broadway in 1996. She wears a tuxedo jacket for "Me and My Baby", "Nowadays" and "Hot Honey Rag". She wears the lacy one for all of Act 1.
Velma wears the same costume for the entire show and adds a tuxedo jacket for "Nowadays" and "Hot Honey Rag".
Their costumes have been the exact same design since day one of the show back in 1996.
Ya know, I have to confess I have always thought the same thing about Roxie's outfit. And it is totally unflattering on Charlotte. If I had a body like hers, I'd really want to have something much more sexy and appealing to wear!....Yes, I know the actors can't choose the costumes or get them changed, but still that little black one-piece bathing suit thing is ugly!
Piragua, Stephanie can NOT dance the part of Velma at all. Velma is easily the hardest part to dance on Broadway right now, and one of the hardest parts to dance in the history of Broadway. Stephanie could hardly handle the dancing in 'The Boy From Oz'. Velma isn't stunt cast because the dancing is so tough and most 'mega-celebs' can't handle it. I'm sure Steph could sing and act the part extrodinarily... but she will not be able dance it.

I just saw this show three weeks ago. Whereas I enjoy Charlotte's performance, her ROXIE number was a complete mystery to me. Total mugging with no point to it and the longest vamp I've ever heard that orchestra play, while waiting for her to get on with it. Amra's accent vacillated between British South African and wannabe tough moll. Also, I thought towards the end she got very tired. The HOT HONEY RAG had no life to it, except that the two of them looked exhausted. I would have expected that from Charlotte who is onstage alot of the time, but Amra?
The best part of this show is clearly the ensemble. Fresh, energized and sharp! And I am still holding out hope to catch Donna Marie Asbury as Velma at some point.
ruthiefan is right about Bonnie Langford. I saw her in the show last year (with Amra-Faye as Velma), and I thought she was one of the best Roxie's I'd seen in a long while. And I had no idea who she was! Check her out if you can. I know I'm going to try.

There's no doubting that she could sing the sh*t out of any of the songs. Ya know what, Stephanie as Velma makes more sense than Jerry Springer as Billy.
